Topic: CB550 standard carb setup

Last summer I began a rebuild on my 75 CB 550. Carbs, points, timing cleaned or replaced with new. everything should’ve been the same as original.  it starts and runs great, idles nice, acceleration is responsive. The problem is when I put it in gear and take off it starts sputtering and continues when I’m driving it down the road. I know the 2&3 cylinder needle valves don’t seat properly and I’m going to recheck the float height. Is there anything else I should look into that would cause it to run so differently when in gear and neutral?

I wish that was it but the choke works as it should.
I just checked for air leaks around the insulator boots again with carb cleaner and didn’t notice anything. I have new ignition coils I will put on when I get a chance.

First question that comes to mind: what parts have you replaced and were they genuine Honda or aftermarket?
Further I'd recommend owners of a CB500/550 with oldstyle carbs that suspect the fuel levels, the simple procedure described in: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,185754.msg2151647.html#msg2151647.
In over 41 years that I own my CB500, I never needed to adjust the floats. No wonder: the parts concerned are still as new.
This is a safe procedure, that cannot cause damage.
