cb550 carb question after cam swap and polished ports
« on: April 11, 2021, 04:51:47 PM »
So I just completed a top end rebuild, new gaskets from crankcase up, lapped valves, mild polish on the ports to clear casting marks, CB650 cam swap is the biggest upgrade, cleaned carbon off pistons and ports, set valve clearances, set ignition timing bang on. After getting everything together, the bike feels good, but is idling a little sporadic. It's idling high around 3000rpm, and I'm having a hard time getting it to settle down to the normal rpm. Once it's wanted up I have to turn the idle know down and a very fine amount brings its from 300 back to 1500. The power feels great in the upper rpm range under load and pulls strong towards the higher end. In the lower load rpms range the power feels slightly bogged and feels like it's bucking in and out a small amount. Nothing extremely bad. My question is, do the carbs need a tuneup or rejetting now that the cb650 cam swap and ports have been polished with the new breathability of the engine?? If rejet, what jets should I be using?

Some background info, bike has 4500 original miles, was a barnyard find from previous owner. Previous owner had carbs professionally rebuilt and synced. Bike was bone stock when I bought it, but had a misfiring cylinder. I swapped the points for a dyna S elec ignition, and replaced the coils with new ones, and replaced spark plugs. That fixed the misfire and bike ran perfectly. Idled great, started great, and had good power throughout the rpm range. It was in perfect harmony.

I guess by this time you will have got the problem sorted but, just in case. I doubt the work on the ports would have any affect and if any, it would be at high revs. A fast idle that varies is often an air leak in the manifold rubber joints but, the carbs on these bikes do have very small idle jets and are easily blocked. A rough indicator can be to spray WD40 or similar around the carb mounts while it’s running and see if the running is affected, either speed or even some smoke in the exhaust. If that does not produce a result I’d go back to removing the carbs and really clean the idle jets and emulsion tubes. If you have the keyhole type carbs take a look at my recent post that shows the hidden jet.
