What happened to my starter?
« on: April 12, 2021, 05:59:39 PM »
Was just about to test compression as I'm losing oil internally fast, so I removed all spark plugs to prepare, inserted compression tester in cylinder one and all of a sudden sounds like my starter disengaged completely. I mentioned in another thread how I was getting some knocking trying to start with low battery juice but idk if that's related. Never had this happen before.

Recharge the battery...
And to answer your thread heading-It is located behind the engine block in the upper crank case casing and has a chrome or black cover over it.

Huh. That sure does sound like your starter is just spinning freely. Take it out and inspect its teeth, as well as the teeth inside the case.

Recharge the battery? It's charged. Explain to me how that would cause it disengage like. Seems strange. How does everything look? You can see some wear there but to me doesn't look like it could slip. I must be missing something about how it functions

I don't get it. Nothing is loose. I never heard it struggle other than the knocking from low battery. Now suddenly spinning freely.

Could be a faulty starter clutch. It is INSIDe the crank cases.

So parts 13 and 15? Is 13 what I have pictured inside?

So if I stick a screw driver in there it should spin freely huh? Lemme check...

Yeah, it's free. Looks deep. Well .. Can I test compression by hand? Yeah, obviously looks I'm going in there anyway but I'd like the extra info if possible first

The starter on these does not directly connect to the crank or primary shaft. Pretty much the starter is in direct contact with a gear around the primary shaft. On this gear there is a one way clutch with 3 bearing things that when spun, lock up on the primary shaft and turn over the engine.
It’s a common failure. You’ll need to rebuild the starter clutch. The FSM says you have to split the case but it can be done finagling it. Google the issue and you’ll find walk throughs

So I can leave the engine in or take it out but no need to split?

It can all be done in the frame. You only need to remove the oil pan and clutch cover... and struggle a bit but it’s doable. I did it this way on my 80 but it’s been a couple years so I can’t give you a walk through

Found it it over there. Same person could have put it in here too idk I just went there to be specific as possible. It's for an 81 cb650 and I'm 99% sure we have all the same parts down there. Doesn't look too hard. And this guide is awesome. 69 pages color.

For future reference, low voltage and kicking back are hard on the starter and related parts. My goldwing acts up a bit when it's cold out. Varnish builds up in the starter sprag.
