Sounds like you got it right, I've used brake clean and a shop wet vac with a piece of copper tube to get slime and sludge out. I was more relaxed about it after watching mythbusters vacuum up gasoline and not creating a plastic jet turbine. I still did it outside though.
I have one oil tank that seems to not have a bung in it, just a self tapping repair plug screwed into the tank it's self. That one may require a tig weld. Another may have rust, so it will get your RX for cleaning.

Interestingly, the Amen tank has no drain......  Though about welding one in, but the chrome is perfect. Probably why there was such a build up of crap?

I was talking to some motorcycle guys today and they SWEAR that one cup of OxyClean in a gallon of hot water will remove gunk and varnish from tanks and carbs like magic.  I have not tried this myself.

That’s a new one, but I’ll bet it works. I often sneak small parts into the top rack of our dishwasher. We use packets of pre measured soap and they do some powerful cleaning.

Oil can be emulsified with detergents and a powerful oxidizing bleach or oxygen bleach like Oxiclean can break up oil and varnish as well.  The heat helps break up and soften the residue in both cases...so a hot high concentration of Dawn dish soap has its positives as does a hot oxygen bleach mixture.

With perfect chrome, I'd probably live with a little extra maintenance or maybe  a bolt in repair plug, that would just require a drilled hole and a little fudging around to get the nut and washer inside.

Don..... it’s not too much work to get the supply line off the engine case. It’s attached to the lowest point in the tank, so I’ll probably just curse away and do it like the last guy did......
