Key ignition identification
« on: May 04, 2021, 07:17:39 AM »
Hi all,

Hoping you can set me straight.

Wanting to get more keys for my cb500 and I believe the previous owner swapped out the ignition, but want to make sure. Right now I am operating with two sets of keys. One set for the ignition only has a lable on the key of 10F (nothing on face of switch). I have another key labeled T4729 that works the seat lock. I have 2 10F keys and 1 T4729. The 10 F keys look older so thought those would be original, but realize that doesn't confirm anything. Based on internet search, the T4729 key seems to match up with keys available to purchase. If that is the case, there is part of me that wants to hunt down a T4729 ignition and key so that Itd be original and I'd only have to carry 1 key type to operate all the locks.

Thoughts?

Most likely, the T4729 is the original key number for your bike, does it look like this?

You'd be hard pressed to find just the ignition switch with that key number. If you want both to match, I suggest looking for both ignition and seat lock with key [or you can buy a key from eBay]

Yup. Looks exactly like that. Image attached.

I find it odd they would replace the ignition switch given they clearly had at least one key. I guess I assumed those switches don't really fail, and the only reason to replace would be bc of lost keys.

I'd love to find an ignition switch for that key number given that is what the seat is set to, and assume the steering lock. I'd be fine to buy another key or two along with it.

Ignition switch contacts do fail fairly regularly
