Motogadget Chronoclassic - Worth the $$$?
« on: April 12, 2021, 09:01:57 AM »
Looking for opinions on the chronoclassic (or motoscope classic I suppose):  I'd been planning on using one - admittedly mostly for aesthetic reasons, although the build-in speedo is nice - on my 550 build, but as unexpected expenses with the project have continued to pile up I'm finding it harder and harder to justify almost $600 for what (to me) seems like just a fancy tachometer...  So, for those who are running one - do y'all feel it was worth the expense, or am I better off spending that money elsewhere?  The rest of the bike will be motogadget so I'll be in their ecosystem already, but I don't really need a speedometer and I can always address the warning/indicator lights with something like the motosign...

I am rather biased, so I do think they're worth it from an aesthetics point of view. The quality is top notch. But they are EXTREMELY PROUD of them.

To that end, I have a used one that was installed and would be willing to sell to you for an appropriate price. You can PM me if interested.

They’re pretty slick and the only product on the market quite like it, so I think it’s justifiable even if the prices are quite dear. I’ll be using one on my current build for sure.

I’ve even been strongly considering integrating one into the control panel on my BMW 2002 along with an m-unit since the wiring in that thing is shot and really not any more complicated than a motorcycle. Just a few higher current items that may need an extra relay or two.

I just wish they’d integrate it to communicate with the m-unit either via BT or a bus wire so turn signals, engine sensors etc. could be wired up at the m-unit and cut down on the number of conductors that need to be routed up to the controls.

I don't think you will find the m-unit to be suitable for an auto as there simply aren't enough circuits to contend with the many functions in a car like, Wipers, Windows, Locks, etc.

The only wiring from the gauge to the m-unit is power. You do tap into the TURN, HI circuits but that is easily done near the component. The OIL/NEU/TEMP sensors are all fed directly from the sensors to the gauge and aren't really passed through the m-unit (power management only).

Such luxuries! A 72’ 02 is extremely basic. No AC, locks and windows are manual, mechanical radiator fan, mechanical fuel pump, engine is carbureted, no rear defroster, very limited instrumentation - mine doesn’t even have a radio, haha. There are really only two circuits not found on a motorcycle which are the wipers, as mentioned, and the blower for the heater. Both are high current and would need to be separately fused and switched via relay anyways. But even then, the AUX outputs would be useful to supplying switching power for those circuits and would allow for keeping those items powered off until the engine is running. Besides simplifying the wiring a bit, it would add all the extra functionality that makes them so appealing for our old bikes - flexible lighting control, diagnostics/monitoring, adding an alarm and making it just that much harder to hotwire by throwing a computer in the mix  :D

As far as the gauge is concerned, I guess more what I was getting at is that the oil, neutral, temp and even speed sensor (if you’ve got it mounted at the output shaft) are all going to be much closer to the main trunk of the harness and/or m-unit, which also has a bus output and is also aware of turn signal status. Even just a little breakout board could cut the gauge wiring down to just power and a single bus signal for those trying to conceal as much wiring as possible. It might be a diminishing returns sort of feature but I still think it would be *cool*, haha.

I know the real world performance of the m-button doesn’t lend a lot of confidence to their bus signal implementation, but perhaps that could be mitigated with properly shielded cable.

Upgrade to the motoscope pro and you have all the breakout buses you want. 😉
