Patience is key. The wiring on these bikes is pretty simple. Be systematic and test one circuit at a time.

I would start with the headlight and make sure that the wires are properly connected within the headlight bucket.

What year and model 550 do you have?

The wiring is generally pretty straightforward, connections are usually colour to colour. If the wrong thing comes on, it's either got the wrong wire going to it, or a bad earth. A bad earth means the current finds the next best circuit to flow through, which usually means through another circuit to earth, but because of the added resistance, that circuit won't be as bright\ loud\ whatever as normal. IIRC the 550 has the indicator switch and hi\low switch on the same (left) switch block. Did you have that apart; could have shorted or broken wires in there. Otherwise , as Bankerdanny says, check inside the headlight bucket. Which parts of the wiring did you work on; just the relay under the sidecover or further afield?
