short 550 rebuild thread - facelift
« on: May 09, 2021, 08:13:38 PM »
This bike is my first bike (4 years ago) - my bottom #$%*, my boo. I learned on her, she almost killed me, and she taught me what freedom on two wheels really is. I get on other bikes but I still don't feel what i feel when I climb on her. Here is the first video I took of her, that was the first time I started it on my own lol, I was nervous I was gonna blow it up. I tore this bike apart before I learned how to ride or even took a lesson.

I did a 550 swap a little while later, 74'550, the frame is a 73'500. I've swapped three motors in and out of this bike, over the years I couldn't afford a rebuild nor had anywhere to do it, it just so happened I was able to buy 550 motors for 100 bucks on craigslist...so I was just swapping motors to keep me on the road.

I never sunk any kind of "nice part" money into this thing, just emergency repairs and paint and what not....Here are a few pictures of what it looked like the first 3 years and then some pictures of it now. Last year I spent some money and bought a truck lite head light, and some knock off LSL for ears from ebay, I also purchased a used exhaust set up, headers to muffler from ebay as well. The picture of it in the shop looking the roughest it has ever looked is less than two years ago when I repainted that motor, I sent the frame out for powder coat, installed the painted motor, installed a new wire harness, electronic point ignition, new plugs caps and rubbers.

The picture of it looking hella rough in the shop is right before I broke it down for new powdercoat, there is a picture with an 18" rear and a 16" hog wheel. I have a couple pics of the bike in font of lake Michigan when i rode to Chicago

LETS GET TO THE GOOD STUFF:

I reached out to forum member Blackfinn because he just upgraded his entire CB550 to all GSXR and cognito moto hardware. Idk if you guys followed any of his builds but he went all out of some beautiful classic vintage looking top of the line parts.

We struck a deal, and those parts took flight from San Diego to Detroit, MI.
Let's just say that Christmas came early, these parts are beautiful, I would never be able to afford this quality of parts if I purchased full retail, with that being said. Thank you blackfinn, for your generosity. The last pictures are ones I just took of the bike, sitting out under the parking shed, It was under a tarp all season but the lawn guys came buy and used their leaf blowers and covered in dirt.

The motor is leaking at the base gasket, runs and rides great but it oozes oil. Now that all of the wheels have arrived, its time to take this to the shop, pull the motor for a top end rebuild, swap in the front end and front and wheels.

Ive always wanted to make my 550 really nice, im finally on that path.

The wheels on my blue bike are going to a project 550 sitting in a corner in my garage, one the parts are on that bike, im sending it off to have the subframe finished....then I can complete that build.

Im excited.

Kevin (aka Blackfin) is a really good guy and (I think) his bikes have a great aesthetic.

Got the new races installed, front end on, I can’t do the clip on bars so I polished a stock top triple. I just wanted to get these fitted before I pull the motor for a rebuild, I’ll order the rebuild kit tonight. I included some shots of the motor so you know just how dirty this thing is, the aluminum in the sun makes it look better than it is.

Got the calipers installed and MC hooked up, I was worried the brake lines were going to be short because this set up had clip ons before, but there was plenty of length, Ive never had new brake lines before lol...I have a fancy Nissin MC now too haha.

everything looks so fancy and weird, my bike used to be a POS.

Used a scotch pad on headers, not bad.  I’ll still put them on the polishing wheel. Calipers and brakes bled.

New vesrah rebuild kit is coming in the mail so im excited, no clue about the piston condition or if it will need rebore yet. While the  motor is getting rebuilt Ill get this list of parts: new chain, sprockets, tires, side covers, and a seat. I do have a cb500 gasket and piston set and was thinking about having the original motor to this bike rebuilt at the same time and put in storage to sell with the bike.   I have a cb550 SS tank and might repaint that one for this build.

do you have a set listed anywhere?

I'll try a bare brushed SS tank first.

Hey Shtone finally had an opening in the rain and finished my crucible tongs so I decided to give one side a try and see how it comes out.
the cover on bottom is the template, the middle was the failure from too small crucible, and the top one is the first complete cast. going to head out this week to the storage shed to see where the tabs line up.

Hey Shtone I was working on the covers and decided to go back to using the original covers instead of the old castings.
these new ones compared to the older chunky heavy ones are super light.
just wanted to check how brushed that SS tank is going to be?
on the 550 covers I used a 120 gritt compared to the lower 350 covers that I did the whole sandpaper line up and then low polish buff.
going tomorrow to storage to do a test install of the tabs and see how much of the tabs need to be thinned down.

WOLF,

dont worry about the polishing, as long as its solid and the tabs are good I can sand smooth and polish...not sure how ill finish the tank, still have to strip the paint off of it and maybe attempt to get two small dents out.

No worries on the tabs they are reinforced under cover
I'm going to make the tabs like I did on the 750 covers. I'll drill a hole in the upper rear tab to put a pin lock

I almost paid 99 bucks for a busted set of 500 finned points and dyno covers but I held out. I ended up bidding on a NOS set for 45 bucks with hardware and won it.

There were a bunch of watchers too, idk how i got it.

im just posting those other bike pics so i have reference for something shiny in that area of the bike.
