Disassemble air box?
« on: May 10, 2021, 04:33:17 PM »
I feel like a dunce. There must be something I’m missing. I’m trying to fully disassemble a 77 or 78 CB750F air box so I can clean it up, replace or recondition the intake boots, etc. I’ve already run into the problem with the captive nuts on the inner two bolts spinning. But I’m missing something about how the outer two bolts come out. I mean the hex bolts that hold the top and bottom halves together. The bottom half is off and I see what seems to be a round collar on the end of this bolt. That keeps it from pulling out. Does that collar come off somehow? I can’t get a grip on it with anything because you can’t get it up above the surface of the plastic.

What is wrong with me that this doesn’t make sense?  Only thing I can think of is this is a two part bolt?  But the parts diagram disagrees.

Oh hell. Nevermind.

They DO come off. They were just so corroded they were stuck right to the unthreaded part of the shaft. I got my littlest vice grips, pressed down “firmly” on the baffle, and finally managed to just grab the edge of them. Once they freed from the shaft and slid up against the threads I was able to get a better grip and unscrew the bolt from them.

Boy, that is one CRUSTY airbox! I haven't seen one that bad inside before.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

Haha. Of all the threads I start or get involved in, THIS is the one you pop in on. Now I’m embarrassed.

Although, I didn’t let it get this way. This one just showed up in the mail and I’m trying to figure out whether I can make it work on my trike.

I figure if I really screw it up, at least I won’t be screwing up one that was in pristine condition someone might have wanted for their beautiful OEM restoration.

Surprisingly, that picture you see makes it look GOOD. Here’s the filter that was in it.

I think it must have literally been under water.

LOL! The air box disassembly is not very intuitive. I did a write up of my efforts here:

Yes! I even found a piece of the sheared off threads wrapped around the bolt like in your picture and wasn’t sure what it came from.
