Snow, snow and more darned snow
« on: February 24, 2007, 06:39:24 PM »
Woke this morning to find the cars on the street buried to the handles. Lucky me I was able to borrow a blower. After several hours of BS digging then it was time to got to the shop and dig it out.  >:( It was about 10 inches of snow! I am sure this is light in comparisson  to our friends up in New York  ;)

We have enough snow now, I was thinking to some creative snow sculptures.  ::) Like one with a middle finger  :D

The worst part is that I rode my bike two days ago on clear roads and nice temps.  ::)

How long do you think it will take Terry to rub it in our faces how warm it is in the southern hemisphere. So long as he doesn't paint some image about lounging around in a speedo while a Koala sips Fosters from his belly button :-X ;D

I am sure it will have something to do being naked around sheep and a loose fitting pair of gum boots in the mud :D

Wanna hear from California?
I have pics of trees blossoming and flowers blooming from our strolls though the neighborhoods, I could post.  We've had a bit of a cold trend recently, though, with highs only getting into the 60s.  And, the hill tops nearby actually had a dusting of snow which was really pretty to see off in the distance from the dry valley floor.  I guess I could have ridden up there to touch it, I suppose.   But, it only lasted half a day and I had errands to run.  Guess I missed my chance for this year. :-\
Anyway, I still gotta wear gloves on the bike and the visor steams up in the morning.  That's irritating. >:(

I really appreciate you guys telling us about the snow and cold though.  It reminds me why I never moved back to Illinois, even though you have distinct "seasons" there.  However, the talking heads on TV tell us when official winter, spring, summer, or fall is technically here.  Handy to know when having a chat with other locals. ( I *think* we're still in winter.  Looks like spring, though.)

Ah but the snow is so PRETTY!
 8)
I have to admit San Diego, CA is nice....if you have enough money to stay out of the wrong neighborhoods,
don't mind tripping over the drunks passed out on the sidewalks on the way to work in the morning while gazing at the
beautiful sunrises,
like "driveing" on the freeways at 15mph, etc etc

My point is all places have good/bad things.

I will stay in Vermont for a few more years,
shoveling snow and sliding around icy  curves,
having my car totaled while sitting at a stop light, (2 weeks ago),
and putting up with low wages
in exchange for peace of mind.
At least here all my neighbors "target shoot" year round,
keeping the bears/coyotes at bay,
help each other out and are friendly (even to immigrates like me)
and we don't have to worry as much about the big city problems.

Keep your damn warm sunshine >:(
I hate the sun ;)

Ok OK, can you tell I am really needing riding weather?
Time to go out and shovel some more snow to get at the woodpile....
peace,
michel

The car was buried to the door handles two days in a row!
The second day (Today) the trailer went mia in the snow. I mean gone! I guess I am lucky the plow did not nail it.

Got a new weapon for this. A Toro dual stage 10hp snow blower. Not bad for $250. I think I will take the old blower and equip it with a motorcycle engine.  :D ;D ::) Hey, then I can have the only kickstart snowblower in town  ;D

You need one of these, Cheapo (I posted it before elsewhere, but it seems appropriate for this thread!)

Nice but just to damn heavy to load. I still "muscle" my blowers. Some how the idea of "muscle" a v-8 sounds like a bad idea.  ??? ::)

Just got back from doing a job, the mighty Toro 524 ate through 28" of snow on a 4X4 driveway in under 1 1/2hours! This thing was just plain crazy how well it worked.  ;D

I will have to post pics of the monster. This thing whips wet stuff 30-40ft!!!! :o And that is at a full swath. I just watched the v-8 snowblower video  ??? My Toro whips snow futher than that  :D

I had to chisel about 3'' of ice to get into my truck Saturday night from the wicked Ice storm
we had in Chicagoland.. Looking to be above freezing all week, so thats a good thing.

I need it to warm up so I can get my lazy ass back in the garage and get the 450 done..

You went the right path, ElCheapo.. I've got a 70's vintage Monkey Ward 5HP 2-stager and if I'm not careful I can break windows with it! I've had to fab many parts for it as they are NLA, but on a morning with 8" of snow all the hassle of keeping it going proves worthwhile... ;D

The only thing I hated about those Toro ones was the Te-junk-seh engines. Used lots of phillips-head screws (like our bikes) and the carb design made for easy blockage with crap. (saw many of them during my tenure at the mower shop) I always liked the Briggs Sno-Gard engines better (less finniky), but that's my own preference..

Some nice Series Ones there Dan ;D

Found those when we were driving back from Atlanta, sitting off the interstate.  I think most of them are for sale, too.  Pretty cool little lot  ;D

Those are the real deal, aren't they?  The new POS Rovers can't even compare.

They are much cooler to look at from afar, than they are to own though, two Series Ones and a 2A appear in my motoring history, they were easily the slowest, most uncomfortable, noisiest pains in the ass I've ever owned :( All three were forever breaking down in new and interesting ways, and they cost me a small fortune to run :o

Would I ever own another? In a heartbeat, for two reasons:
Firstly, I never found a piece of landscape they couldn't just waltz over as if it was nothing, and believe me I tried ;D
and secondly, when ever it was my turn to drive on nights out, all the girls would flock round the cute little 'jeep' ::) dying to find out who owned it 8) That really hacked the guys with the Porsches, BMWs, Hardleys, etc, off I can tell you ;D

Sort of, they were aluminium body panels (mainly from scrapped Spitfires :( ) rivetted to a steel framework.

Which as you can imagine led to some interesting corrosion effects in our permanently damp British weather ::)

With the new Toro weapon I spent late lastnight clearing a small used car lot. ::) This was more a chance to help pay for the machine and help a buddy. Anyway it was all good as I was able to use the starter with an extention cord.  ;D God knows if I had to pull start the monster I would have been DONE many hours before.  :D ;D

Now time for the serious maintenance. Time to grease all the goodies and change the oil.
