Inside handlebar wiring
« on: May 12, 2021, 03:53:01 PM »
When Cb 750's arrived at dealers, were the wires from the switch gear so long that they extended from the switch(es) all the way trough the handlebar into the headlight bucket, or were the wires from the switches with shorter leads that met longer wires somewhere inside the handlebar? The reason I ask is that all of the aftermarket switch gear comes with about 4 inch wires ending in connectors

Factory wires are the correct length.
4" wires are to short, for another handlebar or not made correctly.

Definately and they were already on the bars in the crate

If you extend these wires, cut the switches wires at incrimental lengths so your connections are staggered. This will avoid one huge blob of splices.

The replica replacement right side control I put on my 750 came with the correct length wires to run through the bar

If you have aftermarket high rise bars (perhaps previous owner replaced original) stock wire length will be too short.  I would not try and splice extra lengths into the harness where the splice is inside the bar.   You will have a nightmare of a time trying to feed them back into and through the bar.  Either use ~8" add on lengths you can bullet connect to what is already coming out of the bar or replace all the wires at the switches with extra length wire.

I have high rise bars on my '76 and replaced the switch wires with proper length wires for my bars.  You can damage the wires easily because the holes in the bars are stamped and edges are quite sharp.  I used a dremel to round over the sharp edges.  It makes feeding the wires through much easier and safer.

I would agree, replacing each wire at the source would be far superior.

My brother used to modify his controls and run the wires outside the bars, I was never a fan but the later bikes came that way. The replacement controls I've had all came with long wires.
