1970 Honda CB450 DOHC
« on: May 16, 2021, 09:40:54 PM »
We just got our next project. A 70' CB450 DOHC twin. It's complete and Paul's buddy had it running last year. It's got 18k miles on it. We'll clean it up and make it a reliable rider and let someone else make it pretty. We still have the 80' Suzuki GS 1100E to do a ground up on as well as fixing the Honda TRX350 Rancher atv.

Well I talked Paul into pulling the motor so we can blast and paint the frame and paint the silver part of the motor. The frame paint was just too far gone. As far as we take one apart to resurrect one it's not very far to get to bare frame. Here it is now and normally the front end still needs to come off for service. Amazingly the exhaust system is still good.

We've got the 450 down to the bare frame and I got the small parts that fit in the blast cabinet including the swingarm done. The motor cleaned up pretty well so we decided to save the patina and not paint it.

Yesterday we blasted the frame. Now we have to sand it and all of the blasted parts, then wash and get them ready to paint.

In for a penny ,in for a pound. You might as well be the one to make it pretty again. You could paint that engine when it's out. Patina is over rated  aaaaaaaaaand it's already out.  The tins don't look like they'll buff out but I'll bet they'd look great in fresh paint. See, you're almost done already. It's the domino effect. I find 450's visually pleasing in any condition for the most part but when they are shiny and fresh , they are spectacular. Nice job.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Today we got all of the small parts washed, primed and painted black. The bike is already sold with the motor cleaned, frame painted with the tank and side covers as is. It will be running and riding when it leaves here.

Today we painted the frame, centerstand, chain guard and taillight mount.  Pretty soon it will be time to put it back together.  8)

The back two thirds of the bike is about done. We still have to reassemble the new fork tubes and I have to rebuild the hydraulics. Pretty soon it will be ready to test ride.

They are the original pipes. There's plenty of scratches, nicks and dings in them but they are not rusted out. I scrubbed the outside of them with EvapoRust and a quality fine bristle brass brush, not a crappy HF brush.

When I had my 450 in the early 70's..and after having ridden Harley's..Matchless..Ariel and even early SOHC4's..it blew me away at the amount of acceleration and speed (over 100 mph in about 60 seconds) that the 450 twins had LOL.

One of the great bikes..engineering-wise..coming out of that era..I still feel.  Have always loved Japanese bikes since then BTW

The starter was weak and would come to a brief stop when it hits compression. I pulled it and cleaned up the commutator per the service manual. Now I'm waiting for a new left engine cover gasket. The stock one was pretty crispy.
