650 charging system failure options
« on: July 18, 2021, 08:48:19 pm »
Seems as though my 650 has suffered from the common charging system failure that plagues them. I have not diagnosed it yet but know them and the fact that my reg/rec is a ricks unit, I’m assuming the the rotor burnt up like they usually do. (Obviously will check before doing anything)

Assuming it’s fried, is there anything I can upgrade to that’s a bit more reliable without crazy fab work? I’ve seen previously people discuss using rotors from other bikes but can’t remember what. Should I just get some new stuff off ricks? Things like that.
The whole bike runs LEDs so it’s not like I’m trying to get some extra amperage, just solve a common failure point.

Don't assume, test and measure. ;) Have you checked or replaced the brushes? They are a normal wear item on the 650s.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I've heard of owners here fitting a VFR or CBR600F3? stators to their CB650's,I personally want to do that when I get one.

Your correct the rotor on the CB 650 seems to be listed as a common wear/break item, yet it is the same rotor for the early 80's DOHC CB750 through CB1100F bikes which only on a rare occasion will go out on the bike. Go figure?

To answer you original question the Yamaha rotor from a XS 650 or something along that Yamaha model is suggested to be an improved rotor (never fails) to the Honda unit and is a straight bolt up replacement using the Honda rotor bolt. The Yamaha rotor bolt is a different size to the Honda is my understanding, yet the Yamaha rotor itself bolts directly onto the Honda crankshaft assy using the Honda bolt.

I have a Yamaha spare rotor that I bought years ago for $20.00 vs the used E Bay Honda ones today are $$$; or Rick's high quality which are again $$$.

Here is a picture of the Yamaha rotor and stampings and I am fairly sure it is the old XS650 or a model close to that designation that the rotors exchange easily. It looks totally different on the back side than the original round OEM rotor from Honda, yet it is the same sizing and shape and apparently a VG replacement option all around.

Got a chance to diagnose and it seems like i jumped the gun as usual. Pretty sure i fried the reg/rec.

Now i just want to make sure i did things correctly lol if you see any errors in my testing please let me know
Brushes have a ton of life left and nowhere near wear mark.
Stator should be okay. All yellows tested between .2 and .4 ohms. No OL and similar to each other.
Rotor should be good. I did not pull it while testing though. Slip mark to slip mark 4.1ohms. ground to inner mark, OL. ground to outer mark, OL.
Reg/rec. Bad. (Green to y1: 7.65k y2: 7.46k y3: 7.57k) flip leads and get OL for all 3 yellows. Same result when testing red/white to yellows. Similar values and OL for all yellows when flipped.

After poking around a bit it seems the nut fell off the stud retaining the reg/rec under the seat and it happened to be the one i attracted the ground to. My guess is intermittent loss of ground friend it. (reg/rec is completely exposed to fresh air and definitely did not overheat from lack of airflow in an electronics tray)
Ill contact ricks tomorrow to make sure the oem diag procedure holds true for their lithium version before ordering a replacement.
