Early type 750 Petcock preference Q?
« on: May 25, 2021, 03:06:51 PM »
Today I realized I'm low on early 750 petcock parts and rebuildable cores. Who has experience with repro vs genuine Honda?  Rebuild vs replace? Has anyone successfully replaced a brass stand pipe?  I do have the screw washers new in packages but that's about it.
I remember rotating through the ones I have, two are marked having had internal leaks, one has a shorter stand pipe.
I see some of the ebay cheapies have lock washers for the screws rather than fiber washers. I doubt they will turn off all of the way.

I bought honda oem and oem fibre washers this winter for my gold bike (k1 tank).  They work perfectly.
If it works good, it looks good...

I remembered a relatively fresh petcock was on the old brown tank. I used it and will order a new oem one from my local shop for stock the next time I need one.   I probably have 6 float bowls and every one has the hex rounded off or pliers marks.

Those washers can make an otherwise good petcock leak for sure. They are difficult to test, you need to figure out what holes to put your fingers over and which ones to blow through.

I have an ebay replacement on my 750, I had to fight leaks (not shutting off completely)  and found that the fiber washers  had been replaced with lockwashers, and the knob  wasn't flat on the back.  Most of the rebuild kits on ebay have lockwashers as well, but there are a few that come with fiber washers.  Imho its hard to buy a rebuild kit when a complete valve is just a few bucks more.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.
