Our 19k mile motor is stuck so a top end job is likely in its future.

Best of luck, looks like the forum may get two "Other Bikes" threads to follow.
I just came to an agreement to buy the 73 Z1, I have to get my little trailer set up to go get it and bring it home for its resurrection.
I'm going to start a new thread when I begin the journey; I'm a little nervous because it will be a learning experience; I don't know much about the details of a Z1 and the forums don't seem to be as full of information as this one is for the sohc bikes.
Let the fun begin.

Hey Maui....dont be intimidated, you're going to find the Kawasaki to be very similar to the Hondas that you've worked on.

Thank you, sometimes I obsess about things but they usually work out. One thing I’ve been worrying about (this is how bad it is) is the engine paint. 73 Z1 engines are black with the edges of the fins silver. So I’m thinking, I paint the engine with an appropriate black engine paint (how glossy or not glossy?) and after a good paint job I just carefully abrade paint off the edge of the fins? My mind says that’s bad, it leaves that edge open to corrosion which will go under the paint and ruin it. So do I seal the edge with clear to slow that down?
See what I mean?
It’s a disease.
Anyway, I’m switching the back of the garage over from mostly woodwork back to bike work. I hope to go pick it up this week. The garage is two cars wide by two deep about 1100 sq ft., the back half is where my tools and stuff are, I’m usually doing woodwork but I set it up a little differently for bike work. I may try zinc plating again to see if I can get better.
Down the rabbit hole I go. Go figure I found a 73 Z1 frame number 01886 engine 01784, pretty low numbers, here on Maui of all places.

I would try and get it running first before I started tearing it down or doing any resto,s. Get to know it a little bit first.

I’m going to try, at least to diagnose what if anything is really wrong with it.

Has the owner claimed "ran when parked" ?

Funny you should ask.
He seems to be a pretty straight guy, he's the brother of a former neighbor on my street who switched to Harleys around 2012 which is when it was parked. I saw it go up and down the street around that time, I heard it coming and recognized the sound of an older 4 cylinder bike. He hasn't really said the words " ran when parked" but implied it and the good thing is I witnessed it running about the time it was parked. He also said it was hard to start but ran well. I'm going to put my temporary tank on it fiddle with it to see if I can get it running, I don't know if I'll ride it a little until I look the brakes and other stuff over to see if it's safe.
So in a way, yes, "ran when parked" might be true, I'll find out soon.
I am paying too much but it's a nice low number 73 so I really want to "save" it from oblivion.

I agree with Eric. Of course the carbs will need to come off and apart.  I think you'll find the Mikunis easy to work on.  Curious to see what size they are, many were changed on the early bikes as they could be hard to tune.

You said bike came out if Canada ! I think...wonder which dealer it came from..
The engine paint was matt black , I think. Prep is everything, bake after paint helps. Many chopper and custom engines painted that way,  if prep is good it should stay on near fin edge.... dont park by the ocean every day.l

I’ll try to find out where the dealer is/was.
I’ll send a photo of the carbs. I pick it up Wednesday morning. I made some changes to my trailer to safely strap it down.
Anyone want to recommend a paint?
I’m going to look at POR15 products but I’m sure there are other worthy brands.

It’s home.
Turns out it was purchased in British Columbia near the border with the US originally.
It has the correct head, just the wrong carb boots. The head has the cast in vacuum ports.
There are a lot of things I’ll need to address, the list is pretty long.
I’ll be getting started by servicing the carbs and trying to get it to start just to assess,

Woohoo! New project! Well done mate, get it going and take it for a ride, you'll love it! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Cool, i am in Kelowna BC ...90 miles from border.. now i really wonder what town.
Vics Motorsports was our local dealer, and an old buddy had the Kawi dealership in Chilliwack when Z1 came out..
Quite a few did not survive the first year. If it has original dealer decal even not readable, post a photo please.

I forgot to ask Steve, what's the build date? I'm hoping it's a 1972 build, they're very rare, and valuable. Think sandcast prices, but rarer than a sandcast. ;D

Label on neck says 10/72 build
The previous owner says the dealer was "about 100" miles from the border but does not remember where. I have a document from the BC DMV (not sure what they call themselves), I'll check it out to see if there is any indication of location.
I'll start a new thread for the actual work and call it Maui Z1, how creative!! I really want to hear it run first, I can't ride it any more than up and down the street as the tires hold air but are very cracked and the master cylinder works but not very well.
It kicks over very nicely. I'm really happy the head appears to be correct with the cast in vac ports.
I guess I'll get a larger compressor and baking soda gun to clean the engine parts, the black paint is in pretty poor shape and lacks the silver edges on the fins.
The fork lowers are painted and all photos I've seen seem to be polished lowers.

I'll get some more photos but I think it has early carbs.
The PO said they struggled with jetting. Seeing the 4-1 and tiny pods seems to explain that. I plan to go back to original breathing all the way around. I also may eliminate the oil cooler that's on it, the oil lines look pretty rough and I'll never drive it that hard.
The spokes are corroded, the rims may be ok.
Lots of chrome is shot.

The original rims are date coded, salvage them if at all possible.

I installed stainless spokes from Buchanan.

100 miles from border really narrows it down, probaly a 1 in 4 chance or better its from here.
