Honda OEM O-ring material
« on: June 15, 2021, 01:45:10 PM »
Hey guys, what material are the oem Honda o rings usually made out of? Or does it vary in application?

Looking to replace the o rings on the oil lines on my 77 750k and was wondering if nitrile is good enough in terms of heat? Not really sure how hot that area gets as nitrile has a range of -35°C to +120°C (-30°F to +250°F). Thanks.

I think they used Viton.

On occasions like these I refer to this page:

Reply #27678 Pewe states his big bore bike stays below 120C with good quality oil. 120C= 248F
He states stock 750s only see temps of about 105C in the oil tank. 105C= 221F

Looks like you might be ok with Nitrile.

Honda o-rings must all be nitrile.
Viton feels different, more synthetic plastic.
Not as the little sticky rubber surface as nitrile.

I ordered some sizes of viton o-rings from a UK seller for some future rebuilds.

I've used the Nitrile o-rings in the harbor freight kits with good success for oil and fuel related stuff.

Good stuff guys, went ahead and just ordered viton o rings, since I’m replacing the hoses due to a leak, don’t wanna deal with another potential leak down the line.

Nitrile is ok for medium hot, Viton $$ is good for very hot.
Check your orings near the head gasket, if they’re at all crunchy, get viton.

We used nitrile and viton interchangeably on 10000amp main unit transformer bushings, very hot. The viton fared better but the short sighted boss didn’t want to spring for it.

If you ever want a complete set of o-rings, there's at least one SOHC member who has some kits. I bought one from him and they are very nice, and he's a great guy to do business with.  He even has the washers for the oil hoses and drain plug. There may be other members who sell them as well.

This community is amazing.  I'm also a member of an MG forum, and a lot of those guys are total a-holes.
