Starter issues
« on: June 01, 2021, 09:09:12 PM »
Morning all, I seem to be having an issue with the starter motor on my 650z, it will perform fine most of the time but if riding in hot weather it stops working? All I get is a solenoid click, and it still won’t work once cool. I cleaned and rebuilt it using new brushes and springs around 600miles ago, seems to happen every few months. Last time I ended up stripping it down and cleaned it up again ( although not especially dirty) and it was away again, but it’s stoped again after less than 100miles! Anyone have any suggestions as to what’s causing this? Doesn’t seem right to have to strip it so often, plus it’s a heavy old twat to bump start. Which Honda had left the kick start on these 650 motors!!

Bad solenoid? That's usually the case when the 'noid only clicks, provided a good battery with good clean connections. Try shorting the solenoid terminals together with a screwdriver..

Nothing happens when solenoid is shorted, I've run multimeter across it and there is 12.5 to the B side and 0 on the M side, this changes to 12.4 once starter button pressed, and there is 12.4 at the starter motor end of the lead? I've got motor in bits again at the moment and doesn’t look too bad, plenty life left in the brushes and springs are new, very little carbon dust inside. Will put it back together and hook it up to a battery on the bench to see if it spins, can’t work out why it keeps failing like this??

Sometimes the starter commutator can develop a glaze that prevents the brushes from contact.  So, take some fine abrasive to it to make the copper bright.
