Working on my K1 and finally getting around to some way overdue clutch maintenance. This bike has never slipped, but has always been clunkly/rattly/no neutral/etc. Took it apart this weekend, added the oil holes and chamfers ala Hondaman and fitted an APE 9-disc clutch I bought a couple years ago (as I said, way overdue). Having a problem getting it to work though. This is a '71 motor so it has the shorter clutch basket and does not have the extra thick "anti rattle" steel. When I put all 9 APE friction discs in along with the two extra steels from the APE kit the clutch stack is too tall. I cannot screw the adjuster in far enough to contact the lifter plate and still leave any threads for the lock nut. I figured maybe the early basket was too skinny for the extra plates so I pulled it apart again and removed 1 extra friction and 1 extra steel so it's now an 8-plate clutch. This time the adjustment worked out great, but the clutch slipped badly, so this stack is too short. Anyone had any similar trouble with this clutch in an early motor that could suggest a fix? At this point I've had it together 4 or 5 times, I'm sure it's together correctly, no missing parts, etc. It's just a stack-up issue. I'm considering running it with one more steel but not the 9th friction to split the difference between the too-tall and too-short stack but at that point I feel like I should just go back to stock discs?
