got scammed - my mistake - got too comfy
« on: June 03, 2021, 07:13:57 AM »
I have a wanted ad up for forward controls, got a message from a user asking me to email someone who had a set.

I don't know what the #$%* i was thinking that day but I literally missed every single #$%*ing red flag.

i didn't check the users start date, which was last month, with 6 postings, recommending me to someone not associated with the site.

He gave me pictures of the controls, got my money through PayPal, then ghosted me

Just a friendly reminder to VET EVERYONE.

I have gotten very comfortable on this forum, talking to many people that are trustworthy, so clearly I had my guard down considering I've had about 6-7 transactions with forum members that went smoothly. - IM OUT 200 BUCKS. If you are going to comment about me being an idiot, dont bother, im simply sharing the username and the contact provided so other forum members dont do business with them.

Whoever took my money, go #$%* yourself, im trying to build some #$%*ing bikes.

That guy tried to sell us a top bridge for the 450. He used a picture of the correct piece but didn't notice that the part in the picture was broken. Stupid scammers >:(

this is happening on multiple forums from motorcycles , guns and even razors. WTB ads are being answered by newish members stating their friend is selling what you are looking for and to email them but as soon as you start asking questions they vanish.

There is another thread around here about this particular scam. I and a few other people were contacted by some dirtbag after posting in the "wanted" section.

I hope you find  a way to get your $$$ back!

Very very similar attempt occurred when I was looking for some oil lines. User account was created that same day, and the nature of the messaging was much the same. See below. Hope these examples help others to raise awareness.

I’m just sitting here smoking a dubie, telling the girls I won’t let anyone steal parts from them again. Honestly, the money is gone, I hope the person needed it more than I did. Back to work and make more mula.

Using a credit card thru PayPal will always add layers of recourse to transactions like this.

Conspiracy theory says it's a plot to get people out of certain hobbies for good. I'm sure some might go that route but not me and I think not you either.

I wish I had some controls to offer you.

I always use PayPal for this stuff. A couple of years ago I thought I got scammed by a well known Concours parts guy. For some reason I just waited and after a couple of months he got back to me and apologized, was having health issues. He did me right and then some. He died shortly after that.  This situation doesn't have that feeling to me.

and yes I put out a warning about 6 months ago- same thing...if you post a wanted ad the scum are all over it.
In Calgary recently there were 4 early XS Yamahas [including an XS1] advertised the same day and the photos were of an east coast style house with no snow on the ground where Calgary at that time had quite a lot of snow.
But I understand scumbag scammer got quite a few people with that one.
Cut their f#%$&*g fingers off is not harsh enough penalty.

If you used paypal you may have some recourse, unless you used the "friends and family" option, in which case you are SOL.

I used PayPal :(

Make sure you report to PAYPAL. If he’s properly registered with bank info or credit cards they can make him sweat. I hounded a guy with them for months and got my $200 refunded. He made a million excuses but they eventually just took it back. Good system.
