CB500 shift fork
« on: January 04, 2008, 07:29:02 AM »
First, a happy 2008 to all SOHC'ers out there!

My rebuild of the motor for the 2008 racing season is being held up by a worn  middle shift fork. Turns out that many CB500's from K0 to K2 suffered from serious wear there and at least in europe the part is impossible to find.

Does anybody have an idea if a new "24212-286-030 FORK,GEAR SHIFT" can be found in the US?
funny enough, the -286- in the part number implies that this was used also on 250-350 twins and is not a unique part to the 500-4.

Another question is if the middle shift fork of a cb500K3 (p/n 24212-390-000) would work on a K1 like mine?

I can of course go for a hard welding restoration but could be nice to have a new one in there if the price is reasonable.

Cheers & Thanks

TG

I did but no luck...

the weird thing is that one shop in germany told me that he could order it from the US. would go for it if he wasnt asking for 140$ !!! that's three times the list price!

Obviously he didnt tell me where he is ordering from.... any other ideas?

Only other idea I have would be maybe David Silver Spares.  They carry both US and Euro models spares so you might get lucky.

Ask at www.westernhillshonda.net they did have stock 4 months ago.

A K3 one WILL NOT work as that is a down sizes 550 with the 550 bottom end

Hi everyone

I’m currently rebuilding my CB500 motor and come across the same issue with the centre shift fork.

The centre shift fork measurements fall within the manual specs but does have collision damage on one side.

I am also having the issue as yourself, I can’t find one!!

May I ask what repair method did you go for?

Any help greatly appreciated

Many thanks

CB

CB - I imagine 13 years since this thread was started NOS shift forks are even harder to come by. I think the only option these days is to find a used set in serviceable shape from eBay or to get them hard-welded and ground to spec.

Mine were pretty knackered. I had the forks hard-welded by Fast By Gast and the transmission undercut. Unfortunately, I think Paul might be retired from making go-fast parts for other people now? His website is no longer active, but you could try giving him a call - google still lists the number for his shop.

APE does transmission work too, they may be able to help you out with hard-welding the forks.

In theory they could be diamond hard hromed back to spec as i think thats what was done originaly but as to how and who would do it i have no idea

Many thanks for your quick reply

I did notice this thread was pretty old but worth a shot opening it back up

It appears this is quite a common issue for the CB500 K0 transmission, of which mine is.

Thanks for your recommendations of people who maybe able to repair.

I should of mentioned I’m based in the UK, as this is my first ever build of a classic Honda I’ll
Have to do some investigations if there is anyone that can do your suggested repair over here.

I’m assuming undercutting of the gear, is grinding the gear back to stop the fork rubbing against it?

I am also in UK and its not just K0 that wear but all of them, undercutting is machining the mating dogs on a slight angle to help the gears stay in mesh.
For chroming the only people I can suggest is Phillpots who do fork tube reconditioning, cou could always ask on the UK board for other places(sohc.co.uk)

There are still a few around, but at about £150+. CMSNL have a couple.
I found an immaculate set of forks s/h about a year ago.

Hi
As you are in UK, it may be worth you joining the UK based side of this forum. Many of us belong to both the UK and USA Forum. At least if we find any parts for you here, it won't cost a national debt to post them to you 😁😁😁😁
