Maybe a new season of restoration?

The company I have worked for these past 2 years, who didn't close up for Kung Flu because were had just started building a whole string of medical-device assembly machines last Februry 2020 and were deemed "essential" by the local government, just laid off about 30% of its employees, including me, for lack of any more [new] work since January. I guess the sudden transition from free enterprise to government-edicted business rules caused all their customers to stop any expansion plans, so no new equipment will be built for at least the forseeable future.

But - I have 4 SOHC4s of various sizes awaiting resto in my shed! One is the 550 that will star in the next book, so I guess this will be my summer project. :)

There is a ratty CB750K4, a nice (but oily leaky) CB550K1, a CB350F1 and another barely-there CB750 (I forgot which "K" it is), but I have another engine for it. And, they all have titles!

Yeah, thanks, Jim. This was the first job I've had since 1980 where I wasn't both the 'lead' Controls guy AND the Controls Group Manager. It was kinda laid back working there for me: all I had to do was whatever they wanted done next, and could go home at 5 PM every day. It was novel! I noticed I came home less burned up (out?) and slept a LOT better at night, too. :D :D

 At the end of my 30 years at the same plumbing shop my boss told me he was not paying my foreman's pay anymore. I suggested that was a relief not having foreman's duties like payroll, job meetings and negotiating extras.   My tenure ended shortly after. I went to another shop doing even higher stress jobs but at least they paid for it. My last two jobs were a surgical suite addition at a hospital and geo-thermal in an existing high school.
  The moral is, the reduction in stress since retirement has been good for me.

Remind everyone of your accessories from your shop that you have available...relay kits, etc...

I had an interesting (bizarre?) job for about 18 months back in 2005-6: I was [outwardly] an Electrical Controls Engineer in a [now-defunct] airplane manufacturing company. When I went in for the initial meeting with the VP of the division I would work for, he asked me a few questions and then took me into a small conference room, closed the door and drew the blinds closed(!!). Then he asked me to not tell anyone what he was about to say: I thought maybe he was quitting or something and wanted to let me know before I might start working for him (or...??). Instead, he proceeded to draw an organization chart of the Group I would work in if I took the job. Then he drew the 'line of communication' like you usually see in these charts, connecting me to the Electrical Group's Manager, who worked for him. Then he drew a DOTTED line around that and the middle manager above the Electrical Group, between my new position and his(!). Then he plainly stated that if I would take this job, I would work for and report to the Electrical Group Manager, but he wanted me to communicate directly with him on every Friday before going home. When I asked him 'why' he said they had 'burned through' over 200 engineers in the last 5 years from the pace of the projects and they were about to go into production with the airplane, but he wasn't sure that it wasn't full of troubles that were not being reported properly, because there were many "hurt feelings" working there.

Well, hmmm...

So I told him I was OK with not making any new friends there, as I grew up moving State-to-State every 4-6 months from the time I was old enough to remember (5?) until the end of 1958, so I never had close friends where I worked: they never stayed around! But, I also told him I would need more $$ to justify that sort of work, and he made me an offer that dropped my jaw, so I agreed.

After about 5 months there I figured out the issues within the Electrical Designs and the unpublished issues with the airplane(s) that needed fixing. As I brought them to him (8 of those would have grounded the whole fleet if known) and he issued "fixes" directly, my immediate Manager started figuring out what was happening, although it took him 7 more months to figure out it was me: turned out he was the source of most of the problems, but had been with the company since its beginning, netting him 'friends in high places' who protected him. I wondered if this was how such things happen in other airplanes (like jetliners?) and also how a company might solve them, tricky work! About that time I 'discovered' Dilbert, and it [still] reads just like that company...

In the end the company failed, a good thing. There is only 1 of those airplanes still flying, which was the "X" plane used for all modification testing work (I saw it overhead 3 weeks ago, reminded me of all this stuff again). But, the day that the company closed without notice, at 3 o'clock the middle management called an all-hands-on-desk meeting to discuss who should become the new Director of Controls Engineering, as the new machines to automate all the handwork they had been doing had arrived and were [literally] sitting in the parking lots, on their delivery trucks, as we all met. The group unanimously voted me (!!) to be the new Director, something I had not even thought about. So, I left the meeting at 3:20 to go to another scheduled meeting in the hangers, where the CEO and CFO announced the end of the company, effective immediately, and handed everyone their final checks.

So, I was actually a Director of Controls Engineering, for almost 30 minutes! But in the end, the only part of that job I miss was the amazing salary and the challenge of carrying concealed at work when it wasn't allowed, because I was always looking over my shoulder...

More threads will be welcome by all and even though I don't have a half liter Honda 4 I may but the book, just in case:-)
I might be starting on a Z1 project soon if my search pans out, I really wish you ad a book for those too.
All the best and I wait for the thread(s), it will be wonderful.

Maybe you should just start researching and publishing how to books for vintage bikes, most of the books are almost useless.

Mark..... sorry to hear your news. Your plan is sound and the outcomes may surprise you! The last time something similar happened to me, I stayed “unemployed” for five years and now the last three in retirement. Best thing that ever happened to me and not even a single regret. Roll on.

Things like this always seem to have a silver lining afterward: I forgot to mention in the above story that, beginning 4 days after the airplance company closure, I started My CB750 Book, mostly out of boredom and almost 2 feet of snow outside that winter that just would not go away. It was never intended to become what it has: I thought I might sell 200 at the outside, to members here. I couldn't have been more wrong about that one(!).

So, yeah, maybe I should start with the 550 in the shed this week? I have a bunch of 550 engine pix already. I have a 350F out there, might do a smaller book for that one, too? I have to haul away 2 old CB360 engines, a set of useless 750 cases (chain went thru the support posts in that one) and some other junk so I can have room!

Tonight I am finishing up the new upgrade to my Single Transistor Ignition. It's getting a better circuit board to make it easier to assemble.
I tore down a 750K4 this weekend for a fellow rider in Texas, going to rebuild it, too. Got lots of bike stuff to do!

 I retired from my second career as a Plumber/Welder/Pipefitter/med gas installer/project manager to be a county building inspector. Then they realized adopting the building code wasn't properly passed and it never did.
 Long story short, I'm still successfully retired 11 years later.  The best job I never got.

Interesting you would notice that from their side! That is what has happened in the town/city where I live, too. They thought they could just 'get by' by issuing a proclamation that the Building Code had to be '...the same as the major city adjacent to [us]..." and then proceeded to enforce that.

Not so. Laws are laws: you either make them, or you do not have them, and they must be clearly defined, equitably enforced, and able to withstand juducial scrutiny so as to be valid and enforceable. In America it is We the People who consent to being governed, not the opposite.

...did I mention that I also have a degree in Law Enforcement? That turns out to be more than the people who have been trying to run this town in recent years...

Wish it were so.  I think we started out that way and is the ideal.  But, in reality, those in office are able to evade laws when their political party is in power, and reinterpret laws to suit their goals.  There are numerous examples playing out now in real time, with judges in political alignment.

It is going to get worse as those in power make new laws and rules to further enable their current practice, goals and desires.

And we will let them because most are now indoctrinated to accept this.

That's actually not a bad idea! Maybe I should look into the world of the Z1 for those guys after I do the rest of the SOHC4? I already know the LTD (with its analog EFI system) is a real headache for the riders now, for lack of usable electronic parts. I don't know how I would lay my hands on one, though. Maybe it's too limited?

I WOULD be interested in doing the CBX, but I can't say I am an expert on it. I've rebuilt one and kibitzed on a few others, they are just so rare. I wouldn't want to become like Chilton, who makes manuals with one chapter that is useful and the rest worthless for lack of experience with the actual product.

Truly sad!
But, I have noticed something over the years where these people are involved: they are afraid of light. Every time I have shown up in their playground(s) they have vanished, like darkness does when you strike a match. No recrimination comes, either: they just sort of melt away.

The influence of TV on the present generation has somehow led many to act as if 'that stuff on TV' is somehow sacrosanct, and they don't have any 'power' or 'influence' over it. Also not so: in 1974 I was working for SONY here in Denver when the BetaMax became the "news on wheels" method of getting "onsite news" published quickly. I ran into many people (viewers) who thought this was going to stop crime, stop accidents, stop all sorts of bad things, because it "looked so real, so fast to the TV screen". I about puked then, and it taught me how much TV news is nothing more than a [poor, weak] tool of influence on passive minds.

My view: don't be passive. You will be amazed what happens around you when you don't let 'that bad thing' happen on your watch, and all you did was say, "Hey. Wait a minute...that's not right...". The perpetrator KNOWS it isn't right, and is doing it only because no one said anything, and he/she wanted to.

I’m going to look at a 73 Z1 tomorrow, I’d love to have a Mark Paris book on them because I’d like to make a “stockish” Z1 that’s like new. The books I’ve bought aren’t very good.
There is also a 550 Sohc Honda near me that I keep seeing.
I bet there are many book sales out there.
I’m descending into the rabbit hole I think.

That's how I ended up with, at one point, 12 bikes packed into the garage. Then I built the bike shed and sold 5 of them, so I could walk thru the garage again.
Somehow tho...I still have 8 bikes. Must be the new math?
