What's a decent substitute for rubber handgrip cement ?
« on: June 17, 2021, 07:21:18 PM »
I'm installing new OURY grips on my Honda and had some old spray-pump bottle cheap hairspray,it isn't holding very well. What have you used as an alternative to standard motorcycle rubber handgrip cement ?

Aerosol hair spray, trial size, ~$1

Or dish soap, I've heard it'll work.

Make sure your bars are clean first.

well, once you have contaminated the rubber with hair spray, you are married to using something.  I generally just pop em onto perfectly clean bars and throttle tube.  They stay just fine.
If it works good, it looks good...

These OURY grips fit a tad loose compared to the OEM old grips I removed:I'll need to use some type of rubber cement? Handgrip cement to hold them on,after thoroughly cleaning the grips off from that old pump hair spray.

Acetone?

Dont think so Per, Acetone will evaporate quickly.  Is a great cleaner though.

Grips should not slip on easily, something sounds off  - bars small or grips large??

Throttle side might be larger bore, are you sure they're on the correct sides?

Curious -- what's wrong with standard grip glue? It comes in single use size for a buck or two, and I've never had an issue with it.

I was just considering other ways in case grip glue wasn't available.I'm going to get some grip glue.
The left side of this grip should fit tighter(I have them on the correct sides;the throttle side does fit better) on my CB400F stock bars:I think it's this particular set of OURY grip's fit.

yup, that is how I do it too.  You can also remove them that way and they are still re-useable.

Have always found Oury's to be top notch fit, feel, and stay-on-ability.

I was just curious -- I've heard a dozen alternatives for grip glue and I guess if it's not available where you are something else will work.

I'm still looking for alternatives to grip glue, something commercially available someone has used(who knows what else might work?  ::) :D ) that's just as good, for the future.I don't have an air compressor, doing all this while living in a 2nd story apartment and the bike is parked on the side of my car in the lot.The left OURY did need some glue, for sure.I purchased these OURY grips on Ebay as 2 pair, they came through w/o a package so they may have been purchased originally as a Lot Sale altogether in a large bag and had been sitting?,just not sure.I've always preferred OURY grips when ever I can get them and they usually fit onto the bars and stay put with a dry-fit.
I purchased some Renthal grip glue($10 out the door) and it worked well,8hrs wait time until I can ride;it's 109 degrees out today so I think that may cut-down some of the wait time for the glue to dry.  :)

I also have traditionally slid new OURY grips on dry for years;I like this brand the most.

I think you're right Stev-o;I believe these particular OURY grips are a bit large inside somehow, not by much though.
I don't know how but these are the first OURY grips that seem to be stretched-out inside somehow;this particular brand(OURY)seem to cancel-out the most vibration, imo.

That Renthal grip cement that I purchased from a small shop one town over yesterday worked very well;these new grips had somehow open-up before I purchased them(heat?)on Ebay. They're on there strong now.

Never used the cement.  Goes easily on clean bars and sticks well usually.

I've heard the Oury grips are excellent, been planning to buy some.

Ouray, is an awesome Mountain town in Colorado, BTW.

My go-to grip has been the ProGrip...

I agree with the ProGrips Stevo, last bike I put any regular & serious millage on I used ProGrips 719's

These days I'm a little older and will probably go with a set of Itallian made GT grips, they're fatter and more comfortable.

I love the 'feel' of those Triumph-style grips;I've installed the Italian brand of them before.
