Ive gotta stop this - the stress is gonna kill me
« on: June 18, 2021, 04:14:48 PM »
Well I got the much maligned ex-chopper #$%*box wrecked K0 back together. Took my time [days in fact] and assembled the engine, put it in the frame, cleaned the carbs in my son's ultrasonic machine, statically timed the ignition, rechecked the valve gap and  assembled everything in accordance with known good practice......
And bugger me it wont run.
Latest iteration is that it will start on the choke hot or cold, but the instant the choke is turned off it stops dead!
Ive pulled the carbs again, blasted all the orifices with cleaner and air, rechecked the needle settings [middle position], confirmed all the pilots are clear and the same size, and a bit fat nothin'.
Oh and new plugs, new condensers, advancer is working fine, coils and points plate is off a running K1 I have [I swapped them to confirm it wasnt an ignition problem].....dar dum dar dum.....
Help please.
Al

Air/fuel. Compression. Spark properly timed.  It runs.

Look at the spark plugs. Dry or wet?

Are you operating the choke correctly,  and not reversed on/off?

If it only runs with choke on, then the pilot circuit in carbs is suspect.

up for on......
spark plugs are wet, thats what I dont understand which suggests its running very rich.
But i dont understand why it stops when the choke is turned off [lever down].
Ill go back in again and check the idle circuits tomorrow.

have you tried holding the rpm higher?does the idle screw need winding up?

Is the idle screw holding the slides too open and flooding the plugs? Had that after incorrect bench sync. OR look and see if the slides are still open with tickover screw backed all the way out that will do it, again incorrect bench sync

“Latest iteration is that it will start on the choke hot or cold, but the instant the choke is turned off it stops dead!”

That says to me that it’s not getting enough fuel. Sounds like you have spark and compression. Try spraying some ‘Aerostart’ into the carbs. If it fires up for a few seconds, I would be pulling those carbs and putting them under the microscope. Sounds like something is not right with ‘em.

and indeed the plot thickens....
I raised the idle . These are the separate 4 cable carbs so its not as simple as the later gantry type carbs, but I did it and the bike immediately sounded and acted more normal.
BUT it still dies after 30 seconds or so. So I checked fuel flow from the tank and its all normal and I did remove the inline filters I had in place. Still dies.
Im going in tomorrow to check the float level and see if thats the problem.....

I did the bass akwards slides once myself, when they were correct, the numbers someone (ME?) wrote on the tops were backwards too.
