CB750 Points Plate Question
« on: June 23, 2021, 04:24:13 AM »
Does a points plate differ from a K2 to a K8?
I put a K2 points plate on a K8 engine. It runs good, timing advances good, sounds good. But the points plate is turned all the way left or counter clockwise and the timing light still shows T & F to the right.

is there a diffrence between k2 and k8 points plate?

Part are made to tolerance specs.  This means the actual diameter of any particular points plate can vary from sample to sample. The same is true for the mount bosses on the engine case.  Usually the tighter the tolerances, the higher the rejection rate of manufactured parts during quality control inspections.  Throwing away parts costs time and materials, as does the inspection process.  To save money, tolerances can be loosened, or quality inspections can be eliminated if it is deemed that the customer will buy the part even if the parts don’t meet exacting specifications.  I suspect Diachi  has taken this path with all their offered parts.

If your points plate fits more loosely in the engine bosses, it can change both the point gap and opening point as the point cam rotates, because the spring pressure changes during cam rotation.  Anyway, the slots in the plate are there to accommodate position differences, and no part of the slot is off limits to achieve proper timing and gap.

However, if it bothers you, then re-use your old points plate.  I’ve yet to see one that wouldn’t accept any points set and condenser ever made for this application.

Cheers!

Different advancers?
They might be not equal.
One with sloppy springs allowing advance direct when arms can move freely without spring force the first degrees.
Also possible they have a play, pin into crank.

Both my CB750s have a play. Max counterclockward position make T to line up correctly at real TDC.

Thanks for your input.
I have tried the k2 advancer and the 300 advancer and get the same results. The bike runs good and strong but with the timing light the T mark is way to the right of the pointer with the plate turned all the way counter clockwise.

It is F ' you should check with timing light not T.

T is TDC (top dead center) that should align with case mark when either 1:4 or 2:3 is at top. There is a short movement when piston is at top but does not move. In the very middle of that.

Yes ' F'  mark is what your needing to look at . Also did you set the points gaps with both the main plate and sub plate turned 1/2 way of their adjustment ?
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

She is spot on now. I went back to the 300 advancer and started over from the begining with gap. the timing light is spot on now. The points are old but looks like alot of life in them still.  Thank Guys for your help.
