I quickly gave my tank an ethanol mix used for car windscreens to mix with  water I rinsed tank direct after tank completely full with vinegar for some days.
After that around 1 liter thin oil (diluted with naphta), shook the tank to ensure it covered everywhere.

Almost full with vinegar and move tank now and then did not work, only more rust.

Next time I'll finalize with WD40 spray that remove flash rust and protect metal from rusting.

Finally rinse with fuel. Maybe more WD40 as protection until use.
The pre paint process (wet sanding) will cause some rust if not protected.

The bottom sides were the sheet metal is attached are tight and can catch rust particles.
Tank upside down and use it as a bongo drum might let it loose. ;D
Compressed air to ensure all out.

Whenever using acids like already mentioned and toilet bowl cleaner etc. rinse well with a heavy mix of baking soda to neutralize. May help somewhat with flash rust but best to get it dry quickly and get some gas with a touch of 2-stroke oil and swish if its going to be sitting afterward.

I have an old Electrolux vacuum cleaner and it's got a powerful motor.I hook-up the hose to the outlet of the machine and when it's motor is warm I use it to air-out the fuel tanks and it dries them out good.
I've heard others have taken their tanks out to the hot asphalt(AZ.,etc.)in the late afternoon of the Summer and layed it down on the bottom(it helps to allow the outlet hole on the bottom to be able to breathe)on that for a good while to get their tank bone dry.

After EvapoRust I rinse with diesel. I pour in a gallon of diesel, cap the tank and shake well. Pour off into a clean jug. Let the sluge settle and pour the clean diesel back into tank for another round leaving the sludge in the jug. Dump the sludge and repeat several times. The diesel will coat the tank and prevent flash rust. I've used the same diesel on 2 or 3 tanks before it becomes fire starter.

I got it back on two wheels today so I can work on getting the lower half of the motor back in. Nothing is final yet, still need to bend tabs etc. have some things I need to straighten out such as the paint around the handlebars.
My fork springs appear to be progressive and they are 20”. That’s likely some “ heavy duty “ springs, I may change them to something more stock. The shock is just a support, they get replaced.
Still a ways to go.
William on Oahu is ready to work on the tank when I get it to him. I really hope this works.

Naturally, tape up the frame so there are no chips or marring of the frame if something slips during install...
Best of luck on reinstall.

Thank you
I’ve decided I need to name this project, something I’ve never done.
This bike is being assembled in such a way as to make it more resistant to our marine environment. This bike is also old.
With that in mind I’m naming it.

Yep, my favourite part of a build is when I have a roller to wheel around (especially when most of my projects arrive here in boxes and tubs. Looks great Steve, good work! I liked Per's "Kawaii Z1" idea too, but I guess we're not putting it to a vote..... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

A roller is a good way to stack all your parts that take space on various shelves, floor etc.
I also have parts waiting to be bolted together ;D

EDIT:  I really look forward to see this bike when ready.

I'm sure it will be a winner.
Z1 900 is a very desired bike everywhere and one of the most beautiful designed bikes ever!

I've always thought it was a little pretentious but as I move through this one it is sort of grabbing me. If this tank is successfully resurrected it will be great. Yesterday I removed the tank badges and cleaned them up and they actually don't look too bad. I may just touch up the faded black paint and use them just for the originality. There is a mix of original and not original on this since so much was missing. I've managed to use a lot of NOS such as fenders and such but there were many things just gone.
I'll get a photo of the badges.

I really don't like it when old bikes that I love to ride become "Investments", as every mile I put on them reduces their value, and I hate those boring old farts that don't ride their bikes but trailer them all over the countryside to shows so equally boring old farts can drool over them.

I must put my Z1-B together though as there'll probably be some 50th anniversary gigs that I can ride it to next year. ;D
