Found a set of Duro tires at Revzilla, ordered. I’m getting the 317, 318. I hope they work well, never tried Duro.

Hey Steve...I bought a CB450 last year and it had a set of old Duro's on it, the bike did not handle very well above 45mph. I replaced the tires as well as the head bearings, it handles so much better now.
Given that experience, I would not recommend the chinese made Duros.

When it came time to install tires on my Z1, I wanted a very high quality tire and went with Avons.  That was eight years ago and never regretted it for a second.

Curious what Terry [Shinko's?] and Craz1 have on their Z1's?
On reply #372 Steve he mentions he uses Avon tires and "is over the period correct thing".

Hey Eric...the Duro 317 has the period correct tread pattern so I guess he changed his mind?  The Duros are cheap!  49 bucks...get what you pay for?!

I was going to switch to non period correct and chickened out. I could not find a set of anything else, I could get front, not back or vice versa. I’ll try these, if they are not good I’ll have to pay the price and get a different set when they become available. At least I will be able to get a rolling frame up and continue the project.
My chrome is going to break the bank but I wanted to keep as much of the bike original as I can.

I got all that excited when I saw StevO's post, 49 bucks for a tire? (tyre) Bargain! I punched in Kawasaki Z1, they stock a Duro front tire, but no rear? Ok, what about Duro tires for my other bikes? Hmmnn, I need new tires for my CB750A, I checked their stocks, they have a front tyre, but no rear. OK, a CB750K7 has the same tyre sizes as an Auto, nope, no rear tire again, and so on and so forth. What's the point in only stocking a front tire for the most popular bikes of the 1970's? What a gyp. Dennis Kirk can suck my sweaty balls. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Kīlauea volcano erupting or just glowing in the caldera?
Hopefully you aren't close enough for it to be an issue either way...

Metzeler ME77 another old tire still in production. I think matching front is ME11.

Continental has an old set too, K112 and matching rib front.
All with later rubber mix for improved handling.

These the tire patterns we used late 70, early 80's.

Stock look is more block type?

Hmmnn, $12K for a Z1 that someone has raked the frame? (and thrown away most of the "Unobtainium" early Z1 parts) I'm not surprised that it's been listed for over 60 days Per, looking at that bike, I reckon Steve here got a bargain! ;D

I've used the Duro tires on 750's and yes they are inexpensive. The rears wear quickly but the rubber is soft and pretty grippy. Haven't had a problem or killed myself yet.

Yes, the rebuild style was not that good with our eyes 35-45 years later;) Stock was boring back then
The seat look comfortable. ;D ;D

Maybe 5k can be paid for that one max? Redo the frame one obstacle....
Maybe the owner rebuilt the stock bike for some money he want back and do not understand he wrecked it?

Kilauea is bubbling in the crater. The volcano is over on the Big Island (Hawaii) which is just south of Maui, we get vog (volcano smog) from it when the wind is blowing from that direction and it can be pretty hazy sometimes, messes with folks allergies and eyes.
I think I got an ok deal on this Z1 but the costs are rising as I go along here, I knew that when I started. The po got rid of a lot of stuff along the way so I've had to make things right as much as I can. My chroming of some of the original stuff is going to cost a lot.
When it's back on the road it won't be "all original" but it will be a great example of an early Z1.

I'm sure only enthusiasts/experts will tell the difference after inspection! ;)

I hope your nearby volcano will calm down.
There is an eruption ongoing on La Palma, one of the Canarian Islands.
It is not far from Tenerife, an Island I visited January 2020 and ideas for retirement with its good climate.

That Island has a bigger volcano, Teide, it has been some shakes close.

We have to wait for next trip.

Has anyone seen a nice color wiring diagram for a 73 Z1? I have the one that’s on the bike but it’s pretty hard for these old eyes and not color. I saw something on line but it went to a scam site.

Have you got the factory workshop manual Steve? There’s a guy in New Zealand who sells reprints of OEM manuals for not too much, and I bought one for either my Z1 or KZ1000 and from memory it has a nice wiring diagram? ;D

I vapor blasted the controls and painted them. I decided to try since they aren't original, the wiring loom looked ok and when I took them apart all the switch parts looked pretty good, worth a try.
They will work for now, maybe I can find some NOS controls later.

The glass beads are slow but they don't tear up the soft alloy.
My crude cardboard blast box is working, I think eventually I'll build a plywood new and improved version.

Many thanks
My wife has some artistry skill, she recommended getting some artists oil tubes the right color, it’s like toothpaste. I got the colors and a good small chisel point artist brush, applied the oil paint and carefully wiped it away with the textured side of the little round pads my wife uses to remove nail polish. The texture side captured the excess perfectly with little to no “smear”. They are at the work bench area because sometimes she does her nails there while I’m working on the bike. Very handy.
Cheers

Got started on front brakes.
First I bead blasted as much as I could. The PO had put lots of paint over the corrosion. Then I pumped the piston out. Fluid looked like mud. Lots of work to do here. I was going to dual disc it but I decided to keep it single. I’ll rebuild the MC and caliper. I have to get a repro disc because agin, the PO got rid of the original disc.
the hoses will need to be replaced, lots of cracking. The pipe is pretty corroded too.
