I think I just invented the wheel
« on: July 18, 2021, 10:00:45 AM »
I was in the process of installing the master link on my drive chain.  I hate this jobI usually have to F with it to keep the o rings in place as I try to squeeze the links together enough to slide the clip on.  After screwing with this for about a half an hour I started to look for a spacer I could use with vise grips that fit between the pins.  I found a nut about 1/4" thick with a hole that fit over the holes.  I put the nut between the pins and got it started withe the vise grips.  I then put the nut over the pins and was able to tighten each side down.  If you decide to use my method, contact me and we can discuss a fee.  I hope this isn't something every already knows.

Easy with a chain riveting tool that press the side plate in place.
If you think old fashioned chain with a clip is hard, try a riveted master link chain, solid  link a real pita that need expensive tool that can do the job. Look for Whale riveter.
Hollow rivet link so much easier. But still a side plate that must be pressed in position.
The cheap copy of DID riveting tool good for side plate.

Back in the 80's my bike lost the clip but thanks to the F side plate chain was still together. I noticed while talking with others kicking tires.
