BMW Demo Rides
« on: July 22, 2021, 12:48:25 PM »
The BMW tour is here in town this weekend and I have signed up to ride, hoping to get on a R1250RT, maybe a K1600, and a 900 naked twin. But when I stopped by today there were a passel, 15?, of these R18’s, an 1800cc twin cruiser. So I think that is what will be available. I’ll have to check the spec sheet.
Maybe some custom parts will make this a better looking bike, looks like those mufflers are about to deliver.

I've only ridden 1 [custom] BMW and it was quite a bike, I loved it.

Yes, in Plymouth, and right across the street from the Concours d’Elegance this weekend.

I read that there will be a special exhibit at the Concours: “The Evolution of the Motorcycle”, 15 bikes including

The Classic model has a trim exhaust and not the bloated fishtail.
The driveshaft is exposed, a nod to heritage. I’ll wear my zipper boots, not the laced ones.
The cylinder is huge, oil and air cooled.
It’s hard to imagine a BMW trying to be an HD, but here it is.

Those BMW 1800 look fat and maskuline!
I saw 2 of them in a shop and was surprised that BMW had designed such tough bikes.
The engine look like old mechanical big monster for a bike.

I did not like the boxers back when I bought my K6 1979.
If I should buy a BMW today, a boxer it will be. That's a real BMW for me! ;)
Their 1250 with 136 crank hp and good torque is enough.

Getting an old CB750 into those numbers is accepted.

My buddy has a clapped out r90.  The thing is quite lively to ride.  He bought after a long period of sitting for $800, hooked up a battery, fired it up on whatever foul varnish was in the tank, did nothing else but add gas and oil, and took it on a 900 mile road trip the next week...
If it works good, it looks good...

Down here, every October is the Harvest Classic bike show weekend.  They always have an auction and 3 years ago, a "friend's friend" bought a BMW at the benefit auction that they have.  He didnt have a way to transport it so I offered to take it home for him!

I dont know much about BMW's but it was a fun bike to "demo ride"!
I had it for about a week and then he came over and collected it. [I took it for a couple test rides!]

The next year at the annual show it showed up looking a little different...

I got my test ride in this morning in between the rain drops, no waiting. I walked in (preregistered) and was on the road in 10 minutes. The route was 1000X better than my earlier this year Kawasaki demo ride as the BMW dealer is adjacent to 3 of my favorite roads, and 2 of the 3 were sampled.
Starting the engine, side stand up clutch pulled in the engine fired immediately I blipped the throttle and the bars lurched to the left, what? Another blip and the same response. But thankfully I didn’t notice this response when the engine was loaded. I let the clutch out and the bike rolled away easily, and so did my fears of an embarrassing stall.
At 40mph the engine was comfortable in 4th, I went to 6th and it lumbered along, rolled the throttle on and noted some vibration below 2000 rpm. Throttle roll on’s above 2000 rpm were much smoother. It’s a numbers only digital tach, so it’s not much use until you’re at a steady pace. 1750rpm at 50mph in 6th.
It’s a big bike, heavy and long, but it’s low. Easy on and off and flat footed at stops. Lots of brake, the seat wasn’t as comfortable as I expected. Not laden with electronics.
I never got to turn it loose through the gears, but it’s clear there’s plenty there, smooth and available at all times.
It wasn’t the R1250RT that I hoped for, but BMW has done a nice job on this cycle, even though it seems out of charachter.

It was R1250RT I was lurking on last year. Stardust metallic, a very nice brown color that really came to live in the sunshine with its matallic/flake.
This year only black, blue and white. Black looked mostly matte on those bikes I saw. All dust and dirt will shine. My car is in silver, very seldom any need to wash it, it look OK anyway ;)

Next years BMW colors

BMW has added two dressed touring versions of the new R18. They look like they will do the job and the Transcontinental weighs in at 941 pounds.
Thanks to RoadRunner magazine for the new issue preview.
