Dual disc on 550 help
« on: July 24, 2021, 01:03:54 PM »
Putting dual 550 discs on my 550, I have all of the parts, however realize that I will need to modify the speedo drive plate to make it work…

I know there was a member on here (rangelov) who used to sell a modified speedo drive plate to make this work, but looks like it’s no longer available?

Are there any other options aside from modifying yourself?

What does modifying the speedo drive plate entail?

First question.
Look at the wheel hub after removing speedo gearbox and old speedo drive, is it circular or are there two flats on the bit that sticks out, or post a picture

Thank you responding.

Is there any way to tell the difference without out removing the wheel?

I don’t have a garage, so doing this in the street, so would rather take it all apart just once (if possible).

Depending on which type I have, would it make things easier?

No there isnt and the whole thing may go pear shaped if trying to do the job at the roadside.
The speedo drive plate needs modifying in one of two ways, both require a vice and hacksaw and one reqires accurate drilling and tapping.
A long time ago i wrote a pdf document on how to do the one with two flats, if you pm me your email i will send you a copy

Yes,easy to see. Look at the speedo drive on your wheel, is there a chrome plate with the " imprint " of the 2 flats Bryanj mentioned opposite each other? If so, you only have to duplicate the form of that plate on the rear side of the disc to be mounted on the right side....

Ok, to clarify I do have access to a vice and some tools, I meant the assembly portion would have to be in the street. Sending PM now!

And indeed the speedo drive does have the imprints of the two flats as robvangulik (photo attached), is this the type that you have w write-up for?

And good to know someone is still selling them… Depending on what’s involved, I’ll try to modify my own, otherwise I’ll contact him. Thank you!

When you say to duplicate the form inside that plate… Do you mean to make a plate that fits in there?

Could I just buy on on eBay and modify that?

I get an error message when I try to PM Godferrey ("member does not exist"), I also misread your post... I'm hoping to retain my stock speedo.

When you say you used a file on the rear of the disc... do you mean on the rear of another speedo drive plate you purchased somewhere?

Ahh cool, found the site... thanks!

Those parts get pricey, but looks like very high quality stuff.

Still wondering if I can just modify one myself, although finding a used one to do so seems rare.

To do that you have to cut away part of the rear of the disc carrier AND machine out the centre hole so you frequently get an off centre disc unless you have a lathe.
The myth that an early 500 drive fits is totaly wrong IF you can find one the drive from a 1969 or early 70 750 can be used but as Honda modified thes in 1970 good luck in finding one.

Go to technical and manual click on menue in top right cornerclick on 500 then scroll down to the document i wrote even if Glen spelt my name wrong. I did slightly modify it a couple of years ago if anybody wants a new cop please pm an E MAIL contact as this dumfone wont let me attach it here

That plate is on your bike already, behind that chrome plate right bottom, and you can use your own master cylinder, it's 14mm goes quite well with 2 38mm caliper pistons.

Personaly when younger and loonier than nowadays i found the standard master had too much lever travel so fitted a GL1000 one which had the advantage of the brake light switch on the master and the GL has the sam diameter pistons in the calipers as the 500/550

The gl1000 had 11/16 or 17,5 mm, I found even a 5/8 or 15,8mm too hard, I'd say let him try first, swapping is easy enough.

Godffrey's eliminator is designed for use of an electronic speedo, eith a magnetic or gps enabled one. Modifying the plate that drives the speedo drive for use with dual discs is as was explained, dependant upon the hub design for the drive plate. The disc on the right side doesn't allow the drive unless you modify the drive plate to clear. If the center of the axle hub has flats on each side of the circle or if it is the other design.

Photograph what you have and then you will need to make the mods to allow the gear drive to work when you have the added disc on the right.

Godffery’s website seems to have both… An eliminator and a modified speedo drive (also some photos show his discs mounted with a speedo intact). I’ve tried reaching out via email, phone/VM and FB… Hoping he responds.

In the event that he doesn’t, I’m still a bit puzzled on how to proceed. I’ve attached a photo of the type of plate I currently have (two flats).

So, would I be modifying my current plate? Or do I need to purchase another one to modify because I would need two?
