Need help with next steps
« on: July 25, 2021, 03:07:54 PM »
Hello All,

So I finally opened up the carbs on a modified 1976 750F I recently got and this is what I've found:

Carbs - Keihin 064A
Slow jet - 40
Main jet - 105
Needle - #271307 and is set in middle (3rd) position

It has an electronic ignition, aftermarket coils, aftermarket 4-1 exhaust (probably cone engineering, photo attached) and pods (crap generic).

The NGK DE8A plugs look like attached photo which means it's running rich?
Also, while riding the pipes would start bluing.

What would be the next steps to get this beast running better?

Were it me, I'd source a stock air box and put that on with a K&N filter.

Next I'd find out what parts were changed in the carbs, and verify the float bowl fuel level with the clear tube method.  Restore stock parts if what is there is aftermarket.

Sand or bead blast the spark plugs to get them clean, or get new ones.

Perform the entire tune up check list.

If a dyno is out of the question, then mark throttle and use a test track to check plug deposits at WOT, then adjust needle height with part throttle under load (reading plugs to either raise or lower the needles).

Lastly, tweak the pilot screws to get proper throttle response under load with 1/2 throttle twist at idle in top gear. (assumes Keihin pilot jets installed).

This all assumes you want a well mannered street bike, rather than one for race track only.

Cheers,

I indeed to want a well-mannered street bike. I was hoping I could make the pods work, but from all the research it seems like a PITA and not worth the effort. I should just stick a stock airbox back in and take it from there.

All the parts seem stock and unmolested. Only the pilot jet doesn't have the Keihin mark, only the # 40.

Although, I can't verify they're stock settings because I can't find the carb specs for a 064A, only the 069A here: http://www.hondachopper.com/garage/carb_specs/carb_specs.html

069a is a CB550F carb set up. Didn’t think they used the same numbers on 750s.
