reconditioning of spark plug cables
« on: July 26, 2021, 03:07:46 AM »
Hi . My spark plugs cables are hardened and aged and, due to this, one of them has lost the cap for the spark plug.
Is there a way to change/recondition them or only option is to change the coils ? thanks and regards.

Got to the uk site and look in alladins cave and a member there called ashimoto has done a detailed write up on repairing coils
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

"hardened and aged" is not necessarily a cause for issues. Also, the problem is rarely where the cables exit the coils, even when you may think it feels flimsy. So I'd start by simply clipping the cable ends 1-2 mm and firmly screw on the plugcaps again. But not before you have used the occasion to check the resistances. Each plugcap should have 5-7 kΩ  and from one cable's end to the other you should have 13-15kΩ.

No problems. After dismantling the engine, one cable lost its spark plug cap. I tried to screw the cap inside but the cable is old and the thread worn. The cable is already short at its limit and cutting again may be I can't reach the spark plug.
Thanks.

If your plug wire is too short you can use a plug wire splicer. That’s the cheapest fix. ($5-10)

The splicer is a good deal. Use metal core replacement cable.
If you want to spend a few Euros you can get Dyna replacement coils - these mount to the stock brackets with a bit of filing - and the Dyna cable kit. The cable ends attach with automotive type distributor plugs and you cut the cable to length (each comes with connectors on both ends of a pretty long cable piece).

I've done two sets like that. It does involve removing some of the potting around the cable where it enters the coils, a bit of soldering and repotting. But pretty simple and bingo brand new HT leads.

Has Anyone tried the wintergreen oil trick on these ignition leads?

If not, I might give it a go.
