Storing a Master Cylinder
« on: February 26, 2007, 10:58:02 PM »
I just replaced a perfectly good master cylinder of my CB750K2 with a Brembo 11mm unit.  Great improvement in my opinion with much better feel and much more braking power.

Here's the question:  What is the best way to store the original master cylinder?  Should I plug the banjo end and fill with brake fluid so that the seals stay lubricated?  Or drain it and let it dry out and store dry?  I would like to keep it in good working order so that it could be put back on at some point should I want to sell it and bring it back to "stock".

Thanks.

A rebuild kit will run you somewhere in the $40.00 range. I would say fill it and plug it.

Brake parts assembly fluid is intended exactly for the purpose you describe.

You should flush/clean all the brake fluid from the unit and reassemble with the assembly fluid.

Then, put the Master Cylinder in a plastic bag with a small bag of dessicant, seal and shelve.

The MC will be ready for use whenever you'd like put it back in service.

Thanks TwoTired.  When you say reassemble with the brake parts assembly fluid, do you mean to fill the reservoir too, or just be sure everything has a light coat?

Thanks again.

No, you don't fill the reservoir.  Just the bits inside, mostly rubber, should have a film on them.

Great, thanks.  Never heard of this stuff before.  I tried 3 different auto parts stores today with none of them having it.  The last one called a local supplier and ordered it for me, then went and picked it up,  and I had it 15 minutes later.
