CB650z Shifter question
« on: July 29, 2021, 03:11:58 AM »
Hey everyone, haven't really posted here before. My name is Jasper from the Netherlands, 24 years old.
Not much actual experience working on motorcycles but I "get" most mechanical things quite easily.

Been working on and off on this bike, but haven't been putting in as much time as I'd like.
I get discouraged quite quickly, don't wanna mess things up and unfortunately I don't have too much to spend on my bikes atm.

Have been able to get the bike to run, but not great. These carbs are somewhat frustrating..
Anyway for now I'm looking into the clutch, because it felt a bit "slippery" at some points.

I've noticed on the last drive that the shifter keeps going down easily even after I reach 1st gear.
Is this normal for these bikes or do I need to look into it some more?

I'm planning on removing the clutch cover and taking a look, I've got a new clutch cable already but it seems quite tight.
Got it fitted but the old one was about 2 inches longer, full lock to the left is quite tight but otherwise normal.

Is this just a, if it fits it will work?

I really wanna get this bike going again and actually have some fun with it! :)
Here's a picture in the current state

When the bike shifts oké you're fine, same for the clutch, when it really slips it will happen mainly in higher revs in higher gears.
Lubricating the lever can make a real difference in force needed sometimes.
Are you aware there is a quite active club/Forum in the Netherlands for sohc Honda's? Do try www.cbfourclub.nl, nice people, lots of knowledge and assistance if needed....

It's at least a bit closer to home (wherever that may be).
Did you use the shortest possible route for that new clutch cable?
And yes, on most older Honda's you can still move the shifter pedal up when in highest gear and down when in lowest. With eighties and later bikes the pedal blocks then.
Very nice looking bike btw!
