750A alternator curiosity
« on: July 30, 2021, 01:57:46 PM »
I paid $50 for delivery of a really neglected 750 A for the rims. I parted it out and hung on to the electrical system. Although I'm a big fan of if it ain't broke don't fix it, I'm curious about the higher output of the A's charging system. At this time I don't have a 750 with an increased electrical load but could in the future, does the use of the A alternator require the A rectifier and correlated wiring?

I think it's all the same gear, stator and all. The difference being solely in the field coil, having twice the windings of a stocker. Or nearly twice the coil resistance anyhow.

Do I understand correctly? I picked up an 'A-bike' field coil for my K8 build, photos and resistance measurement are in the link in my signature line.

I hear back in the day adding this field coil was the trick behind those multi- headlight setups on some choppers.

A friend had the A and a Suzuki T350 on a trailer, his buddy bought a house and they were abandoned behind the garage there. For the princely sum of $50 he dropped them both off. No titles and lots of rust.
The A was the better of the two, I re-spoked the aluminum rims to my wrecked F0's hubs so have a disc brake rear and double disc front, with the tall 76A fork lowers, the same as F0/1 I think.
I noticed the rec/reg are different on the A, wasn't sure if the coil would know the difference.

Don, I have the A parts in my collection. They, field coil and stator, are wound differently to increase output. 285W vs 225w or close. Trying to remember this one - the rectifier/regulator ?? is also different and had double connector wires with a different connector to handle the extra output.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Thanks Jerry,  I'll dig out the a wiring harness and find that rec/reg and plug it into the A wiring so it doesn't get lost.

I believe it was a separate rectifier. Ricks does have a reg/rec specific for the matics.
