1978 CB550K wires melted near regulator and blinker.
« on: August 08, 2021, 09:26:49 AM »
4900 miles on the bike.
I modified tail light to be a two bulb setup, and added two auxilliary tail light brake light combo from a  circa 1980 CB650 and then changed most bulbs to led.
Wires have melted under left side cover at the  connector plug to the left of turn signal flasher.
Looking at shop diagram three yellow wires from alternator to rectifier have melted.
Before that shop informed me of melted ground wire to rectifier. In the pictures I replaced green ground wire with fused orange wire , but green on both ends.

I am thinking rectifier?

Any suggestions ??

Thank you.

Probably not, what colour wires have melted and what colours in the block?

Check the Green ground wire between the rectifier, up through the harness to where it attaches to the frame at the coil mount.

Even a momentary reverse battery connection can take out those wires as well as the red ones.

In some rare cases where the battery runs too low on fluid, the charging system over currents and ruins the wiring.

Check rectifier six diodes, as it can take these out too.

You can check regulator function.   But not much the stock one can do to make wires burn out unless stabbed by an axe.

Not enough information given to say regulator caused it.
Why do you think regulator?
Your additional changes are more suspicious.

Marksman, could there be a misunderstanding? When I first read your first post, I had the impression you  mistook the turn signal relay for the regulator.

No, I know what my turn signal relay and regulator look like
Last year while being serviced mechanic noticed burned wire, and faulty harness connector.
He fabricated something from old harness
So I am not exactly sure which wires have now melted.

Odds are you have a short in your new wiring, anytime you have wrinkled insulation you should replace the wire when sorted as you are drawing too much current. Check your bulb socket contacts for continuity to ground...odds are good your new signals have a problem and will require rewiring.
