Left turner strikes again...
« on: August 12, 2021, 06:09:43 PM »
Well, that sucked.  I was the victim of a left-turner on the way home from work today.  Had to be on my prettiest bike too.  Bent the forks, bars, left side controls and turn signals, some rash on the tank/pipes/alternator cover (also some rash on me...).  Glad to be walking around though.  Curious how the insurance adjuster is gonna react to this.

Unfortunately at the age of the bike they might totall it just for the tank damage. Glad you are OK and this will be a chance to practice your bondo skills. Make sure you cleen out that leg and get some triple antibiotic on it.

Ouch! Glad you're able to write about it John, at our age we're not a bullet proof as we once were. My insurance company would probably write the bike off, then give me back the remains as part of the settlement, plus give me $2K for new riding gear.

I don't know if your insurance covers your riding gear as well, but if it does, (or even if it doesn't)invest in a pair of "Draggin' Jeans" or similar, they're kevlar lined, don't weigh much more than regular jeans so won't make you sweaty (or sweatier) in hot weather, but will save your skin. Glad you're otherwise OK. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Glad you are still with us and bike is rebuildable or can transplant into a new frame for another bike to ride on... Keep the infection at bay and ibuprofen or other pain meds flowing to lessen the discomfort.
Good luck with insurance, adjustor is paid to keep offers low, so don't take less than its worth and getting other insurance to cover your gear is irregardless of your insurance... Get checked over by doctors and follow up with them in few days if other symptoms warrant and have them help you manage the healing and pain. You heal quicker with pain being managed well...

Glad you are mostly OK.  Really sucks about the damage to the bike.  I would see a doctor and have it documented for any aches/pains.  (It could be important down the road!)  Insurance adjusters will probably total it and sell you the remains.  It really sucks!

If it was the other driver's fault there may be wiggle room for more $ to  pay for damages to the bike.  Thats why I recommend seeing a Dr.

Hope you can repair the damage without too much trouble/expense.

JLeather, So glad you have written this not from a hospital bed. Likely due to your own response.
It’s your right leg cut, hooked under the handlebars? But the bike went down on the left. Good that your headlight is on, but not good enough for the turning driver. We’re they distracted? What’s the speed limit on that road?
You’re likely hurting today, see a doc, take Motrin.
Again, glad it seems you’re (mostly) OK, and sorry for that nice looking bike.

I suspect I hooked my knee on the steering stabilizer that was fitted to the bike (see photo below).  Bike hit the car on the front/right and was thrown off to the left.  I'm sure it's fixable, but depending on what the adjuster says I'm not interested in fighting for the right to keep it.

Terry, usually gear around here is covered at actual replacement value.  Helmet is scuffed so I'll claim that.  Jacket is ok.  Boots and jeans are a little tore up.  I'll get my receipts together, along with the $400-$500 I've spent on the bike itself in the last few months and give the at fault driver's insurance a call.

if it's the driver's fault definitely pursue it with their insurance, don't let them get away. i was rear-ended in 2019, the driver didn't admit fault and actually even claimed it hadn't been her who hit me... took the better part of a year, finding witnesses and collecting statements from them until i finally got my damage compensated by her insurance. could've just paid for new parts myself but it was a matter of principle to make her live up to her responsibility.

and please please start wearing full protective gear.

As has been mentioned already but glad you did not get hurt worse. Looks like a pretty peaceful stretch of road there as far as congestion. What was the other drivers excuse, sun in their eyes or something ?

The whole principle of insurance is that it puts back in the same position you were in the before the crash if he was at fault.  If they say you were somewhat at fault, they will look at a percentage.  If he was totally at fault you should be able to pick out a bike that is exactly the same and they should buy it for you.  Do some research and get some pictures and prices of similar bikes and show it the adjustor.  Call the adjustor and ask him to exedite it beause you need to replace it or repair it.  If it was in nice shape let him know it.  Tell him what you did to it.  Bore him to death.  Good luck.

I have all my vintage bikes insured with Hagerty at a declared value. So if you declare the value at 5,000 you get 5,000. They may ask you for pictures and the value you declare must reflect what that model is currently going for. You cant declare a value of 10,000 if the bike is currently going for 3,000. I have 6 bikes insured with 300/500 coverage and pay a little over 500 per year. If you look at what some of the vintage bikes are going for it makes sense to check them out. For example my Z1900 bikes are fetching between 15,000-20,000 lately. I don't have them insured for that much but my declared value will cover the cost of the restoration and then some. If you have multiple bikes they are all under one policy because they know you cant ride them all at once.

craz1 I have Hagerty AGV on my Panhead, but for some reason I never moved the 550 over.  Too late now I guess.  Hagerty won't insure my special construction choppers, so I've always also got a Progressive liability policy for those.

ekpent, this is a backroad I often use to avoid a nearby large town with several traffic circles and perpetually bad drivers.  It runs through several civil war battlefields speed limit ranges between 35 and 40.  It's a beautiful stretch of road and I usually don't even see another car on it.  The driver simply said she didn't see me.

flatlander, I was wearing a full face helmet, tourmaster jacket, leather gloves, jeans, and Bates composite toe boots.  My right leg and left hip took the brunt of it, but I doubt I'll switch to padded riding pants for short local rides even though I'm sure they'd have helped in this instance.
