Stator cover oil leak?
« on: August 22, 2021, 09:33:36 PM »
I'm finally getting around to getting my 76 CB550 up and running unfortunately, its been sitting the last few years and when I went to start it up a few days, it seem to have developed a leak from the stator cover. It started to drip from what appears to be a cover gasket (new one coming), but also the rubber grommet on the cover. I can't seem to find the replacement grommet for the stator cover? Is there another way to replace this?

The rubber is molded into the wires so the only way to get a replacement rubber is a new stator winding. Only aftermarket are available now unless you can find a nos on someone's shelf.

The stator/alternator, call it what you will runs dry on 500/550, Seal on the crankshaft keeps oil out of this area. Leaks are rare. There is a plug with O ring that is retained by this cover that seals the high pressure oil gallery, but leaks also rare. Do not run bike without stator cover in position or pressure will eject plug with some force! The rubber round the leads is just for insulation/guide purposes. Your leak may be oil pump, final drive or gear lever shaft. Or may be it's coming from above and running down.

NEVER put compound on that O ring/plug as it goes straight into the main oil gallery
