drag bike guy
« on: August 20, 2021, 07:59:12 pm »
I took the three 750's  to my car cruise tonight and met a few awesome 750 fans, a few had them way back when but one guy is a drag bike guy with some old sohc parts laying around. If we get together on some stuff I'll report here first. It's got to be worth looking at even if I don't get anything.
Film next week, he thought it was cool that I was into 750's.  He's got at least two titled frames and some performance stuff.  Met Russ Collins at his bike shop, actually drove there to get stuff, I saw pics, the real deal.

This should be fun to follow, thanks for having us along Don.

I'm glad to hear all went well and safely bringing the 3 K0s out to show and back. We've all had "that conversation" with a stranger about one bike, but with your 3 K0s I'm sure you attracted more of the harder to impress folks.

One guy at the cruise was bent over studying an engine, I asked him if he was a 750 guy, he replied he was looking to see if I had  a Don Johnson engine. Don owned the local Honda shop and built himself some awesome engines. There were stories of turbo liter bikes, webers,  big bore strokers etc. He made sure his was the fastest one around.
My brother owned one a few years ago when nobody (him or me) was doing anything with 750's and he told Don about it. He came right over and bought it, now it's gone, along with Don.  No idea where it went. His partner's estate sale included loads of cb500 new old stock parts.

A guy that used to street race my brother on 750's talked to me, I pointed out where my brother was and they spent an hour catching up. Their friend that had a 750 Kawasaki triple had passed on and the guy was sad to hear that.

He had an 840cc 750 engine that was famously fast around here. I remembered his name, he blew it up and stuck the #4 stock rod out the back of the crankcase. Then he built a 1,000cc motor. He was disappointed, thought the 840 was as fast or faster, maybe due to using the same head with stock valves and smallish cam.

Its funny on this forum.
Although there is a lit of hoppec up 750s on here, not many folks seem to race them.
Even though the SOHC 750,s modified enjoyed a long histiry of drag and streetracing.
Often when I relate a few tales of what we did  or what we saw.. i get calked a fibber.. Oh well their loss.
At least a few on here understand that a good holeshot, and proper gearing  can catch more powerful bikes by surprise.,

This guy mentioned Isley's 750A but not by name. My worry is, that I seemed too excited to hear about his 750's and now he's looking at them with a new enthusiasm.
Even if I don't get any parts and only made a new friend it's all good.

His cb stuff is all stashed away. I'm visualizing him re-discovering it again. He does need $$ to fix his modern drag bike so maybe that opens a door for me.
