My pension plan is over funded, they were forced to give me more money.

Fully retired from Law Enforcement over 20 years ago at age 50.  I have had several interesting and fulfilling careers since then.  I finally fully retired on my 70th birthday almost two years ago.  I sometime think about going back to something part time, but I talk myself out of it on every occasion.  If you owe multiple motorcycles and an "old house" there is always something to do.

I'm considering the purchase of some acreage in eastern Maine for some light homesteading and potential early retirement. The buy in is low and there is potential to plunk down a solar array which will offset if not completely cover the whole cost of the land, or I could look into leasing some of it to a Solar Farming type company. The place is 300 miles north from home and we wouldn't get up there very often. Winters are a bit heavier there but they keep saying global warming is on the way, so it might not be a big deal a few years down the line. For about the price of a good used car I suppose I should consider it. I'm 50 now and my divorce ten years ago decimated my savings. My youngest is about to turn 16 and I guess I'm struggling with turning this page. I'm making pretty good money and despite the pandemic slowing things to a literal crawl I'm still on call 24/7 and drawing a regular salary whether I have to go out to work or not.

I've been enjoying a non-early retirement in the US Virgin Islands since 12/22/2018. NO stress unless the beer runs low. No looking back. It was easy to walk away for me. No issues financially.

Which Island? I was always a fan of St. John's myself.

Looking out at St John now. I'm on the east end of St Thomas just west of Red Hook up the hill in Sapphire Village.

Jerry glad you are not on St Vincent having to evacuate because of the volcano. Yeah, it is quite a distance away...

I was medically retired from the Canadian Army after just over 22 years of service at age 43. I dont need to work as I am financially set due to my pension and disability benefits. My biggest hurdle has been figuring out who I am. I was a construct of the system I worked in since I was 20. So when i put down the uniform i put down the biggest piece of my character. Since then i have travelled extensively throughout Canada and the USA and have a closer relationship with my sons who are now 21 and 24. I say to anyone if you can move on with life and not be bound by or to the system then you are free....
If ever there was a creator of bastard sons, it is the open road, for she has claimed so many young men yearning for freedom......

Today is officially my last day of full time employment. I start part-time (same job) July 1.

When I left the mill, I made it clear that I was leaving because I was tired of working overtime, swing shifts, holidays, etc. The new job was supposed to be Mon-Fri, 7:00 - 3:30. That quickly changed and we became "event support" for a HUGE sports facility next door.

I sucked it up for a while (new department, growing, etc.) until it became very clear that things in the public sector (municipality) move painfully slow. Still, I was "all in" and worked some second shifts, ALL weekends, etc. I had several discussions with supervision reminded them why I left my old job (which was discussed in my hiring interview). Easter weekend did it for me. I put in my notice.

We had some part-time positions open (remember.....painfully slow, that includes filling vacancies), and I mentioned that I would be interested. The bosses boss stopped by and told me they were planning on promoting me to crew lead, with a "significant" pay increase. I told them thanks, but no thanks. My time is way more important. They asked me to stay and I agreed to part time.

Part of me wishes I had taken the promotion and stuck it out, but then I am constantly reminded of the politics, the weekends, etc. BUT... they now have a crew lead position posted. I hope whoever they hire just leaves me alone! LOL
It's a bit bittersweet, as my direct supervisor and I built this department from the ground up. And I have been recognized and told I'm valuable. But the thought of an outsider coming in to tell me what to do....ugh. I'll probably even have to train him/her!

I'll be alright. My money situation is OK. I'll even get a raise by going part time (pension + drawing from investments + P.T. salary). And while they're caught in the middle between department heads, I'll be riding. While they're working weekends and holidays, I'll be hiking with the dog.

Today I went out on my Suzuki Bandit, to ostensibly check my PO Box, which is 1 1/2 miles away.  Beautiful winter Wednesday morning, so I detoured through the hills, ended up riding 50 miles or so.  Still not missing work...   ;)

I sure had planned on retiring early.  But a late life divorce... and a damned expensive one.. derailed my plans.  The divorce was not all together surprising, but the impact to my financial status certainly was. I got taken to the cleaners.

I took a package... forced actually... 4 years ago from a major player in the medical device sector after 20 years. Puttered around for a year and considered making it permanent, but in the end decided to work a bit longer and maybe pad what was left of my nest egg after satisfying the ex.  (Did I mention that was painful?)

Now I'm back in the lab at Intel and actually doing more satisfying work than I've done in the last couple of decades. I believe I will enjoy riding this out for another few years.  The project pipeline in the shop will be there when I'm done. And I have a number of them pending.

So for me , it's probably too late for true early retirement.

A few weeks ago, the fellow I race with (endurance racing a Toyota MR2 Turbo) lost his Dad. He was exactly my age (two days younger than me). I stopped working +60 hours a week, 7 years ago. If you can manage the finances, JUST DO IT.

I just went from sort if retired/disability.. to working part time again.  Not working meant no money to spend.
I have storage units and will always need some of that, but setting upshop and working part time feels good .. mainly because i am doing what I like and getting good pay.
Unfortunately, i am usually pretty beat after 4 or 5 hours, and have to shut er down.  As I started up one of my old customers started giving me work again and keeps me pretty busy. But clean work and good pay.. only drawbackm dont get to work on my projects. But things are falling in place, setting up again takes time and energy... finally getting my comoressor and anither machine hooked up tommorow... not having air sucks..
I enjoy the flexibility.. some days  if not busy .. i just play around or build shop stuff.

Frank..... sounds like you’ve struck a decent balance, and that what really matters. Try making one hour a day for your projects too.....

I'm getting in the mood to jump on a Goldwing and just ride.  If not now, when?

Don, your weather is approaching winter just around the corner, so go for it...get those rides in while you can.

I rode my Suzuki VStrom yesterday and returned around 6:30pm and the mosquitoes just mobbed me as pulled off my jacket and put away my bike. It was like they were waiting for me! It was awful. I hate monsoon season as the mosquitoes populate in vast numbers and are awful. During the dry hot days of summer they are all but non-existent. I hate mosquitoes and am not a fan of monsoon season.  It was 95-96f out when I got home, but all the rain has the bugs and insects in high volume...

And as far as retiring, I still have not woken up one morning wishing I could go to work.  And that's saying something since I loved my work. That said, given the opportunity I would work a few days at a time to be around my union brothers again or teach classes if they needed me.
