Bonneville Bound
« on: August 27, 2021, 08:26:44 PM »
I was Bonneville bound when I first tried to post this before leaving the house Wednesday.  That post doesn't seem to have taken.  Anyway, at Bonneville now, or rather in Wendover NV now near the salt flats.  Bonneville motorcycle speed trials registration, pit setup, tech inspection and fuel tomorrow Saturday.  Land Speed runs start Sunday.

I've run my stock 75 CB750 here in '16, '17 and '19 in the stock classic (pre-1981) class.  Going to run a 1971 CB500 this year but will try some modifications.  That would be the modified classic gas class.  Mods include a Mike Rieck prepared head with oversize intakes, and everything that should go along with that, CR26 carbs, 4-1 Hindle exhaust from RippleRockRacers, HD cam chain from CycleX.  I went through the bottom end and installed new primary chain, crank was balanced by APE and stock rods shotpeened and installed with heavier rod bolts.  Per Mike's recommendation, sent my cam to Megacycle for their 126-20 grind with custom 110* lobe centers.  Dyna S ignition. Following that I screwed it up by not acting quickly enough to get custom pistons forged.  Started to run into trouble finding anyone who could forge pistons smaller than 58mm.  Finally was told some could be billet cut but the backlog would put me near my departure date.  Well the pistons didn't arrive as of last Friday so I put the motor together with the stock cam (I procured another) and pistons.

After getting the head bolt washer out of the engine where I dropped it, and getting the motor together and in, I got the bike started Saturday morning, got it actually running Saturday night and took it for a test ride Sunday morning in the neighborhood.  It just wouldn't get going, kept stumbling, finally quit.  Oh, gas was off.  Got her going again, tried to hit the throttle hard at 3500rpm, it hesitated for just a second, and then bam, the exhaust screamed, and it took the heck off, hit second and did it again.  I went home grinning ear to ear though it wasn't much of a test in the neighborhood streets.

I have no idea what it will do out here on the salt but at least I was able to bring a running bike.  Looking back just now at a post from 2017 you guys had so much great advice on tuning, gearing, dyno information, etc. that I wont be able to utilize until next year.  There is a fellow from Texas who I've spoken to but not met who built his own portable dyno and brought it to the salt this year.  He offered it up, we'll see.  But I am totally excited to be here again and I think I smiled the entire 1500-mile trip from Texas.

Looking forward to seeing Dennis and Jerry again, and thanks to Mike Rieck for all his work, time and advice.  I'll post a few pics and will report on the escapades for those interested.

Hope you have good results on the salt and have fun. Critical your flush all the salt off asap afterwards from what I have read and seen of bikes and cars exposed to it. It works its way everywhere.

Rich had an initial run today that went well. 103 ?? for starters on a new bike.

Dennis got 2 runs in. First was 137? Then a 123 after dropping 2 teeth on the rear in an attempt to compensate. He wanted to try to run it through in 4th after dropping 1000rpm going into 5th on that 1st run. That didn't work well. He entered the km at 130 and cut the throttle when he felt like it was cutting out. Battery perhaps?? but not. The DA reading was at 6600' on his timing slip so he adjusted mains from 122.5 to 120's and did some carb checks. Salt, water and a little crud. Should be ready to run tomorrow after visiting the fuel station. Still running partial streamliner at this point.

I am bailing Tuesday morning for points beyond.

So, Sunday I made one run mid day after finally passing tech.  I had to build a metal chainguard because the one on my bike which I guess was stock was plastic.  Modified class so I needed metal.  Dennis to the rescue, I was able to fab one with some aluminum "cutoffs" he gave me.   The start point for mile one is much closer to the track than in the past.  You ride out when its your turn and turn left onto the track at mile one.  Dennis would be starting from mile zero.  Timing is from mile 2 to mile 3.  I am having trouble with the CR26 carbs below 4k rpm and stalled the bike when I got the go ahead for my run.  Stalled it twice more in the 50 yards to the track, kept thinking they are going to run up behind me and give me the hook, get out of here you.  It always fired back up, I'm using the stock alternator, battery, and electric starter.  New bike so tried to take it easy, track is so nice like a freeway that in fourth and fifth I let it run and went 103 as Jerry said.  Wouldn't get past 8k rpm

Monday I waited near 3 hours for a run as I also did yesterday.  My rearsets and shift linkage was loose, I messed up the shift and as rpms dropped those carbs couldn't take me hammering the gas and she quit and I turned off track and tried to get out of the way so others could run, only one bike on track at a time.  Fired it up and rode it back to pits.   Before going home I switched from 105 main jets to 100s, and flipped the shift linkage over so I would be 1 up and 4 down.

Tuesday I kept her lit till I hit the track, eased it to 4k and then hit it, revved up nice to redline 9200rpm which I used as shiftpoint, fourth gear took a bit to reach 9200, shifted just before timed section, rpms went to 8k in 5th gear, and then stayed there.  Felt so much better, but still at 8k in fifth so went 104mph.   Next run I let it rev to 10k where I shifted and stayed in 4th, hit the timed section at 9800rpm and she only climbed to 10k, went 106.  Talked to Dennis about how safe to rev much more, he said let her rip.  Tomorrow I'll make a run in morning coolness and see what happens.  I'll try to take more pics.   Dennis ran about same today as yesterday I believe, I'll let him tell it.  Very hot today, with lots of smoke from California.

Racing resumed mid day Wednesday, helped Dennis with one run, then made a final run.  She revved to 11k pretty easy in first 3 gears, topped out at 10,500 in 4th which was only 500 rpm quicker than yesterday's last run, so I shifted to fifth before the timed mile, went thru the mile at 9k in 5th.  Ran 109.4mph.  Packed her up.  Great week, learned a lot, saw old friends, met new folks.  Thanks again for help Dennis and Jerry, thanks Mike Rieck for head work, this thing PULLs from 5-9k, can't wait to get cam and pistons in.

Few pics below including one of an RD400 which bumped record in this class from 113 to 128.

Waiting for opening on Saturday.   The smoke from California is helping keep the heat down I believe.

Rich, great pics. Sounds like you had fun and have the salt bug now. Look forward to seeing next year's runs with the upgraded parts installed and the bike tuned.  109.4 is a pretty good number for stock displacement motor with a massaged head.
