Glad everyone had some fun.  So the salt conditions were good I hear.

Any details on that would be most welcome.  With all the questionable salt conditions over the last bunch of years, good salt is great news.  Any idea if there was a consensus on why the salt was good?
Any changed to the salt brine drama?

It's been a nice read Rich. You should be excited for next year with real pistons and the cam in there. 109 mph with the stock parts is very good.

Thanks guys, it's always fun here.

George, it was like a freeway out there.  Hard and smooth almost everywhere.  Similar in 2018, but I hear it was many years since that good.  I'm not sure what affects how the salt settles out. They drag the course and it was a little choppy when turning off course but even driving my van to the pits, I didn't have to listen to the tools rattle.

I loved the pics and updates,
Photo of the entrance line up tells the story, its a real pilgrimage for the speed junkies.  ;D
Also those little ankle biting RD 350's used to give my 750 a hard time circuit racing as well, just haul em in by end of main straight then they would slip past me for the rest of the lap, pesky little buggers.
The cam will make a huge difference, better to go racing with what you got now than wait for perfection,  which never comes.

Thanks for the report. Great salt conditions is awesome.  It’s still on my bucket list but the cross county travel issue for a once a year event and the questionable salt conditions over the years makes it harder to commit.

I do, however, have the makings coming together for a pretty nice 997cc race engine….potential salt flats use was always a consideration.

Cross it off the list in 2022.  But be warned, there is a virus going around.  It is known as 'salt fever' and will have you coming back year after year.

Don't feel bad about the chain guard.  There's some confusion in the rules.  Namely, if plastic was oem then its fine. Nope.  One guy had made a carbon fiber guard.  No go.

Yes Bomberman, the rules can be confusing.   And interpreted differently by different folks.  My stock plastic guard looked OEM but modified requires metal either way.  In the end, what is actually required is satisfying the inspector and what his interpretation is at the moment.   The inspectors are actually great, interested in helping everyone get out on the salt.

I will be there next year.  Still waiting on those damn pistons though.

Well, it's 2023 and the plan is to go back to the Salt for the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials with the CB500.  Rained out last year 2022.  I'm registered and the hotels are booked (casinos for the wife).  Of course, it rained last week while SCTA was setting up for Speedweek, I believe they will try to start racing today.  From his posts it sounds like Dennis, Old Scrambler is actually out there now.

Anyway, my billet cut 12.5-1 CR pistons finally showed up, so the bike is put together with those plus the Megacycle cam.  To recap, we ran in 2021 with the Mike Rieck ported (seriously) head with oversize intakes, CR26 carbs, Hindle exhaust, Dyna S ignition.  But stock pistons and cam.  Now I have the new pistons in and the Megacycle 126-20 cam with custom 110 degree lobe centers.  We went 109mph in 2021 but it required nursing it up to 3500rpm, stumbling until then, at which point it just takes off and screams.  Always starts easy and idles easy.

Now, with the pistons in and cam degreed, it still starts and idles easily but is even harder to get going, stalls and even dies at 3-4k rpm.  Rips if I can get it to 5k rpm.  I'll try posting or linking a couple videos of my first tests a few days ago in the neighborhood.  Here is the carb situation.

CR26 carbs on the Cycle X manifolds which Mike flowed to the heads. 
2021
100 main jets (went down from 105s while on the salt in 2021, didn't change much)
65 pilot jets
Needle is supposed to be a YYO 7-slot needle, with clip in 4th slot per manual online. Turns out mine was a P151 5-slot needle with clip in 4th slot from bottom.
Pod type filters that came wth the CR26 carbs
D7 plugs, gap .027
Stock timing
I think I ran the 100 octane race fuel from the event vendor, can't believe I didn't write that down.  In gas classes you have to buy gas from the on-site vendor, fuel class run what you want.

2023
Running it in the garage the plugs were really fouled black so I changed a couple things before test riding.  A fellow racer pointed out that it needs to be under load so further testing will be on the street (who needs lights, brakes, license plates).  I should have rode it before changing but..  Changes before the first test:
95 main jets
55 pilot jets
moved clip down to 3rd slot to raise needle
Did not have the filters on

Will post the videos, pics in next post.  I guess I know nothing about tuning outside of stock except what I have been trying to gather from here and elsewhere lately.

Wow, that was a long post.  Let's move to pics and videos.

First video shows stalling twice while babying the throttle, it actually stalled three times.  Second video shows it nursing past 3k, wavering between 4-5k, then taking off.  Cut throttle pretty quick after it took off because the street ends, its downhill and I found that I had not adjusted the rear brake very tight (moved it to a hand lever, helps unloading and pushing it around).  No front brake on LSR bike.  I don't know how to actually put the video itself on here.

It sounds like a lean bog to me. I would start by increasing the main jet size, then possibly raising the needles. BTW, I assume you replaced the fouled plugs before the videos were recorded? Also, please post a pic of the pods.

Do the CR's have needle jets like the mik VM's do? Those alter mid range flow handily

No needle jet replacements but many needle tapers available. Also a variety of throttle valve cut aways.

Yeah Scotty!!!

And thanks for everyone's input including all the previous CR posts as well as FunJimmy's post.  Scotty answered the question I forgot to directly ask which was from the video -is this a lean or rich condition causing the stall.  My buddy had already suggested raising the needle prior to the video run.  With Scotty's advice I put the 100 mains back in (from the 95s) and raised the needle one more slot (now at 2nd from bottom).  I also put the air filters (CR pods) back on.  Just ripped up the street and I'm pretty happy.  Ran great.  I have it idling about 1800, and it had no stutter or hesitation.  I am STOKED.  My starting line embarrassments will have to come from some other reason.  No video but here is a shot of the custom pistons as first received, another shot of some MRieck magic.  Plug shot from after the 1st videos.  Oh, and Scotty requested filter pic.

Rich, I would go back to the original 105 mains and 65 pilots like Jimmy ended up with. Regarding the pods, those look fine. :)
