76 550 motor pulled apart with questions
« on: September 04, 2021, 03:12:24 PM »
So I had my old  motor laying around that was leaking it the tops of the headers bad. I finally got this apart with some help from the manual. I guess I just have few questions if someone could help.

1 how do I leave the pieces apart there have oil on them? Soak them in oil until I put back together? I have feeling they may dry out after cleaning?

2 . Some of the gaskets are caked on and I don’t wanna scrape to much on it. Any tricks on getting it smooth?

Once I have this all apart what should I do since it’s apart this much?
I’m not very technical and handy so this is a big step for me so far.

Also if I can post a photo I saw a odd hollow piece or cap that fell out the bottom someplace but I have not a clue where this goes. Any ideas on this ? Nevermind can’t post up a photo.

You have to have 5 posts before you can post photos unless you put the photos on a photo hosting service and share links to the photos.with your post count you should be able to post pics. Must be image size blocking you. How big are the files?

Download the manual and read the manual to better educate yourself on the names of parts.
I kind of interpret your post as having taken the top cover or cam cover off the motor which reveals & releases  the camshaft. Hopefully in doing so you backed off the adjustment screws of the rocker arms. To reassemble you need to use the ribber band trick or you will bend valves or crack valve guides.
Wrapping the cam and rocker arms in an oil rag or oil and put in a plastic bag will protect them. Do not mix up the rockers, they need to stay in the same position.
The oil leaks could be simply a valve/cam top cover gasket but you will want to replace it along with the pucks. Get the replacement pucks from Parts N More or CB750 Supply as they have the correct thickness for replacement head gaskets.

Post more so you can upload more pics. Share the history of where the motor came from and it's condition and mileage, etc.

Tells us where you are and maybe what bikes you have and what you plan to do with the motor...

Welcome to the forums.

Old gaskets need a soalk in a parts washer and a sharp scraer, minimum rebuild is
Primary chain
Cam chain
Primary dampers
Oil seals

On top ofthat any worn out or damaged parts
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!
