Yeah, it was very fiddly to clean out every little corner. for 2 weeks, every evening an hour or so.

The CB500 is finally back together and yesterday I took it to an ID-inspection station to get it registered. All good

All in all it took me a year to get it back on the road, really happy with the results thanks to all the info available on this excellent forum

Tnx guys, yeah a lot went into shipping

I'm gonna use the bike, but as I put it on historic rego, you can only use it for 90 days a year.
More than enough for me

For now I'll keep it in the lounge because that's climate wise way better than in the shed and I can have a look at it every now and then.

Yesterday I took the CB500 for a spin. Beautiful winters day.
It runs perfect, no flat spots, no leaks, no weird sounds from the engine, all good. the only little thing that annoys me is the noise coming from the front brake. I used copper grease at the back of the pads when I installed them.. maybe they have to wear in? The brake works fine and doesn't run hot.
I was also wondering if I should change the oil earlier than normal after the top end rebuild or not?
Anyway some pics from yesterday

Hi I was wondering if someone has tried to split the headlight unit in order to clean/dry the inside of the glass. I think mine is still the original one with the big round bulb. According to the parts manual it's one part and not splitable.

If it is the sealed beam don't try it. Get a new sealed beam or upgrade to a H4 bulb headlight for far better light to see down the road.

The reason not to try to open up a sealed beam headlight is they use an inert gas in them so unless you can replicate the process to vacuum suction shell after you reseal it and inject the gas, you bulb will not put out the light brightness any longer. Back in the 90s I went to a friend who showed my the process that Phillips did to inject the gas. It was a big plant.

If Australia is like UK we did not have the sealed beam. It had a 35/35W separate bulb I think and a separate 5W (P) pilot bulb. (do you have a P position on your RHS switch?) The silvering on original lights will invariably be degraded and not easy to fix.

It's a sealed headlight from Stanley (see pics). I recon there's no gas in it anymore as moist found a way in, gas must have found a way out. The replacements are all without the pilot light hole in it. I would like to upgrade to H4 but also keep the original round glass shape and pilot light.

Strange headlight, looked at CMSNL and indeed Australia had a sealed beam version of the UK, replaceable bulb type. But it does have the separate opening for a 5W pilot light. Probably just use as a parking light in Aus if you do not have the P. In the UK we were allowed to drive with just the 5W illuminated in some conditions. Different country regs. US bikes do not have it.
Example shown may well be fine.
