Topic: Vintage Hi-Fi enthusiasts?

I just bought on Saturday this circa 1971 or so Allied model 426 receiver and two matching Allied speakers while out junkin'. It all works and was 10 bucks. I looked it up a little and I think I read it has a power output of - are you ready - better sit down - a whopping 7.5 watts per channel -    Retro is kinda hot right now so maybe make a teeny bit on it someday for somebody who wants a period radio.
  More Lo-Fi then Hi-Fi. 

I have an old "realistic" model about the same output. It sits on my nightstand and I use it to listen to the radio and whatnot. Couple small JVC speakers under the bed and I often use my Monitor 10 headphones when I want to "make the world go away".

These little units have their niche, you just have to find it.....

My son has both a big drum kit and electric guitars. Glad I don't live around him also !!

I annoyed neighbors for years when I was younger. I played guitar and was in several bands. I had an early 70's Marshall 100w Super Lead half stack amp at one point. With volume around 3, you were rattling things of the neighbors' walls across the street lol!

I just recently started picking a little, but this time, it's a headphone amp or acoustic guitar. I'm already pushing the limits, noise-wise, with the old rowdy v8 mustangs.

This is my Vintage Stereo system. some from the 1970's some from the 1990's

Sansui 9090 receiver ( recapped/LED's, other updates by specialist)
Technics 5 disk changer. love putting my Disks in spiral play.
Technics SL1600 with Ortofon cartridge. Purchased in Japan in 1977.
Advent Heritage Speakers.  (refoamed the woofers, but still needs work)

Still listening to the same music I came to like in the 70's

yep....here's the pioneer equivalent to the sandcast 750...
 a few years ago these were selling for $4000....I know because I wanted one....
10-15 years ago you could find 'em in the trash....or at goodwill for a couple of bucks...

I have a "Wanted, old vinyl albums" ad on my local Nextdoor. I've made quite a few good scores on there.

Today, I got a reply: "Hi Scott— saw your posting on Nextdoor. Not sure you’d be interested in the following: Marantz receiver model2235B United Audio turntable Dual 1226 JBL speakers model L26 I’ve got some old LP records too but gotta look for the box. I bought these in mid 1970’s and haven’t used them since the late 1990’s. They’ve been stored in my bonus room, not sure if operational now. If interested, let me know."
So, in addition to the 50 or so albums (all in excellent condition), I snagged this stuff. I'm thinking of using it in my office. Or, possibly using the Marantz in the living room in place of the Pioneer.

The speakers need some love; new foam and some elbow grease. I'm scared to even fire up the turntable or receiver. What's the first thing you would do on some equipment that's been sitting for 30 years or so?

id open them up and look for corrosion,use compressed air and blow em out aswell,spray the pots with that cleaner spray made for them maybe,mine were real scratchy,not so bad now.

Might need new capacitors as the electrolytic capacitors do go bad over time. But, would need to clean it up as Dave has recommended and then see how it sounds.

 I have not, and was about to give it a try after watching some videos online. But I found a guy in Charlotte who does it for a very reasonable price, so....easy button it is!

There's an online company called studiosoundelectronics.com that has them and a very good video/tutorial;I was going to attempt that procedure back in 2010' when I was living in Nashville,TN. I had access to many good thrift stores then and found lots of electronics.

I took the cover off the Marantz and blew out the dust. Turned down the volume and plugged it in (no speakers). Powered up fine but I see that a dial light is out. The TAPE light didn't come on either. I can see the FM signal stregth needle move.
Since I can't change the bulbs myself, and there are two pots that are not easily accessible, I've decided to let a local guy take care of it.
He has experience with Marantz and I think it's worth doing right.

Plugged in thr turntable and got nothing. Like there's no power to it at all. It also acted weird when I tried to balance the tone arm. I nearly unscrewed the weight and it was still way off.
I'm not sure if a Dual 1226 is worth investing in. I'll do a little reading and see if there's anything I can do.

Pulled one of the speakers and I'll start refoaming and restoring the cabinets and grills soon.

This vintage Bose unit was in our old home and my wife didn’t like the “look” for our next place. When I built my shop, I framed up a recessed outlet and mounted the wall bracket on correctly spaced studding. The unit hangs at one end of my 20’ X 46’ shop, which must be the ideal shape. It plays tapes, cd’s and has an excellent Radio. The sound that comes from just those two side speakers and some others small ones in the back is simply extraordinary.

Today I changed the batteries in the remote. It makes me chuckle every time. The face plate is a lovely piece of polished aluminum and to give it some “heft”, Bose buried a huge, rectangular piece of lead inside it!

I've jumped in the vintage Hi-Fi game. I recently picked up a Sansui receiver and a pair of Bose 901 speakers.  Currently dont have a good location to set them up so they are in storage, maybe they will go in a future man-cave?

BTW - stopped by Walmart the other day to pick up some printer ink and noticed they sell vinyl records. [may not be a new thing, I rarely go there]  Eyed an STP album that I would have bought if I had a turntable!

Scott,from what I remember a tech in a shop telling me in 2010' was; "make sure the center coil/cone(where it sits above the magnet)was in a neutral/centered position,rather than off-center before I actually glued the new foam down onto the cabinet"  enjoy

My mistake. It’s a Bang & Olfson(?)!
