CB650 throttle cable ends - where do they go?
« on: September 21, 2021, 11:13:10 AM »
In the picture I've pulled the throttle wide open and fixed it with some cable ties (damn hard return spring made my fingers all bloody).

And I know the left side tab is for the push cable, and right side tab for the pull cable.

but where do the throttle cable ends go? I really can't tell, and I really don't want to pull of the carbs to look (it would be the first time for me to do that too).

The 'pull' cable end attaches to that round 'reel' looking part directly below where the cable tightens onto the upper mount:the 'pull' cable needs to be wrapped around that 'reel' starting at the front of that 'pulley/reel' and the cable-end needs to get hooked into the hole on it in the back/bottom of it.The cable shouldn't be screwed-down tight until you first hook it up to the hole in the back of the 'reel/pulley' first. When you have connected both pull & push cables to that pulley, then finally tighten them both up at their top mounts and adjust the tension according to the book.

Ok I think I've spotted where the push cable attaches (cyan circle).

But in a vid on YouTube he says that the pull cable is supposed to attach somewhere on this prong/hook (yellow circle). I don't quite get that. Does he mean that there's a hole shaped slot too somewhere close by for the pull cable?

The picture with the blue circle, yes for the push cable and yes to your last question. The pull cable attaches to the same round pulley as the push cable, only it's underneath at the bottom.

Which brand cables did you purchase? I like the stock Honda cables, when you can find them;I've purchased NOS after scanning Ebay using the part #'s.

I ordered some generic repro ones from a local dealer. In the past I replaced some cables on my old Suzuki and everything fit fine fortunately.

Good point.
Now I'm a little worried that the cables are too short.
If they are I'll return them and order OEM/NOS but they're like 4x the price of repro cables  :'(

It's a friend's bike and I want her to be able to ride it much sooner than later so keeping my fingers x-ed.

Honda cables are superior to aftermarket cables and usually last longer too.

The cables I recv was a genuine Honda cable (made in Japan) and Hi-lex/TSK cable.

Successful install finished. I think she now owes me a beer or 3.

  • New right hand switch installed.
  • Drilled a hole in the handlebars to locate the switch (and managed to break my 5mm in the process)
  • Front brake switch replaced (original was stuck and broke apart) so had unmount the front brake lever assembly and hammer out the broken plastics.
  • Routed and installed push and pull cable.

The pull was the most difficult to locate on the 'reel'.

First I tried with a piece of a butchers string, then a piece of brass wire I had in my workshop.
Eventually by jamming the wire (including the outer cable sleeve) as close to the 'reel' I managed to loop it around the 'reel' and grab it end with a combination of a magnet, a screwdriver and a needle-nose plier and 'hook' it into the slot. Once done the rest (securing the cable on the tab) was a piece of cake.

I'm fairly confident that I can prob replace the cables in less than 30 mins next time (I hope that need never arises).
