I don't know how or why Honda's adaptation wears the brushes so quickly. I've never needed to change brushes on my cars and trucks, even into the 250k mile range.
This type of charging system has the advantage of much less drag when the rotor is not powered up.
When I had a CBX, I carried a spare set of brushes in the toolkit, along with a short t-handle to pull the cover off.
