Engine Assembly - start in bottom or top case
« on: October 06, 2021, 09:29:06 AM »
Been awhile (ok decades) since I put my 750 4 engine together.

Finally getting around to my rebuild and can't remember if I load up the top case and then slip the bottom over it or vice versa. Thinking its the former. Appreciate if anyone can jog my memory.

Thanks

Both ways possible.
I have the bottom on bench, fill it up and can test to shift the gears before closing.

Most professionals have top case on an engine stand (engine upside down).

When mating the cases and getting the shifter forks to fall into place is one way better than the other?

I've always done it upside down, never really considered the alternative. Can't think of any reason it woudn't actually work. But most of the fasteners are on the bottom, and I think the top, with studs, would be harder to handle plus you have to get the chain and rods through the case while holding it up and not messing up the sealant.

Mine was done upside down as well, seems like the most natural way to do it?
