Clip-ons/upper triple clamp question
« on: February 28, 2007, 05:42:30 PM »
I want to put clip-ons on my '75 400F and was wondering what to do with the bar clamp. Can I grind/sand the bar clamp off the top and refinish the triple clamp or am I inviting catastrophe? I've seen one source for smooth upper triple clamps but they are a bit more than I am interested in spending on this.

Have a look at ProTeal's latest build....his set up was nice...if memory serves he had it filled with slag and then ground and filed it back down.

Didn't sound too painful and looked pretty damn good!

That's exactly what I did.
Top tree of the CB450 Project --->

And the one for the CB750 (still has to go on the bike) --->

I just ground the mounts down, had my chassis shop buddy fill in the holes with some alum. slag, then did some final grinding/sanding and I was done. The 450 tree I just painted, the cb750 tree I had powdercoated (after above pic was taken of course).

There is no need to spend the big cash on a aftermarket smooth tree when you can just take a stock piece, some time, and come
out with basically the same thing...

THANK YOU!! That is exactly what I had in mind. It will be more fun making it than just buying something anyway. This forum rocks!

I've got a 1" by 8" by 12" piece of billet aluminum $40.00. Half of it will be used to make a new top triple for my project.

My machine shop will match the spacing and size on the original holes and drill the piece after I cut it to shape.

Silver Fox - are the slots in the top of the yoke the bar mounting holes? Did you artfully shape them or is that the shape they came out when you were done grinding the tops of the bar mounts down? The clamp came out great! Is it finished beyong polishing (clear coat, clear anodizing)?

Morning(in Germany anyway)
all i have done is to cut off the bar risers with a Dremel tool, then cleaned the surfaces up with a file(carefully) then just sanded back until a good finish followed by a polish with some soap and a wheel on my drill and a mini one on my Dremel. The holes are there without any help from me. Pretty easy job, but you just have to be patient polishing ;D, and it is very satisfying once finished.

Keep us posted, and good luck
