Shop Lighting Suggestions??
« on: October 26, 2021, 11:38:29 AM »
My shop is long and narrow. The ceiling is at about 9’. Most of the light fixtures came from an old wharehouse I demolished, +25 years ago. 8’ fluorescent, twin tube, single pin bulbs. Lamps are almost impossible to find, and I am down to my last, massive ballast..... I wired them in three separate sections and would like to upgrade the west end, where I do most of my work.

What are you guys using for general lighting? I need to start modernizing, and frankly would like to add some more “brightness”. My eyes are OK, but prefer the extra light!

I installed 4 LED strips I picked up at Costco for about $25 each.
WOW!! What a huge difference it made. They are pre-wired to plug into each other so installation was a breeze and the power savings is significant.

I kept my fluorescent fixtures and just switched out the standard tubes for LED tubes and bypassed the ballasts.  They're two-pin tubes, but they came with their own tombstones, so swapping your single pins out may be an option.

I bought a box of 10 line voltage LED GE bulbs for 4' fixtures. I removed the 6 ballasts so my race trailer will be that much lighter, the wiring was easy. It took some wire nuts and side cutters.
It was 12 bulbs before, this box had 10 so I used one bulb in the middle fixtures, can add the other two later if I think I need them. The fixtures had T12 bulbs before, I'm not sure why the box said they replace T8's but they fit just fine.
I used the newer T12 bulbs to replace some in the garage and used 4 LED's for use with the ballast in place that had been in the trailer. Now I have a huge mix of shop lights. Some of the cheaper menards LED's interfere with my FM radio. Some don't.

I went to Hogtown cycle in Lucknow with a buddy earlier this year and they use these all over their shop. Really lit up the place and they are cheap. Connect as many as you want..
I plan on putting up some this winter.

Wow Lash, those look like a pretty good deal.
With power costs steadily rising this seems to be a good way to go, especially for a business.

I have four in the single bag of a 3-car garage. They work great and we’re super cheap. I’m pretty sure I picked them up at Lowe’s.

If you go with the LED florescent replacements, beware...that they may not last very long.  But they are so cheap, just replace them right?  The lights are 25' off the floor in my shop.
If it works good, it looks good...

I got 3 at menards and all three have gone kaput, you can't buy the same ones twice in a row. A set of 4 and a set of 3 are still going strong.

Feit Electric is one of the brands Costco sold in store...
They hold up fairly well. Yes, limited life on cheap LED lights is to be expected.

I did find I still had a few tubes, which o replaced. Also took down a few and gave them and reflectors above a good wipe….. I think that alone brought the levels up +25%!

I came across this picture today and thought of this thread.
My shop has these drop down lights along both sides (7 light fixtures x3 = 21 light bulbs) plus the ceiling fan light.
I had installed 60 Watt equivalent LEDS in all of the fixtures and it made a huge difference over the bulbs that I replaced.
Then I installed the LED fixtures and it really highlighted how inadequate the lighting had been. Definitely one of the best additions I have added to the shop.

I was in my shop all day yesterday and the day was overcast. With out the usual light from the windows, I really noticed the old lamps are dimming down! Watching the flyers for options.

Those walls are WAY too clean!  Knock a couple of holes and smear some grease on them.  ;D

I agree that the walls are too clean! I have not been able to spend much time in the Garajmahal since I built it.
I have a bunch of stuff I plan on putting on the walls...grease and holes are not on the list though

If you want to leave your existing fixtures in place, you can buy a retro kit to convert them to 4' t8 lamps. Then use a direct wire ballast bypass high lumen 4' t8 lamp. Or you could replace the whole fixture with a Lithonia 8' led strip, they make them in a standard or high lumen version.
