New Project
« on: October 30, 2021, 09:41:25 AM »
I am leaving tomorrow for a trip from Virginia to Tennessee to pick up a new "When the Snow Flies" project.   I am paying way too much for it, but vintage Honda's certainly aren't cheap anymore.  I will have to J.B. Weld two additional cylinders on it if I want to post the process here, but looking forward to the trip........

Here you go, fresh off of my truck. I went straight through from Tn. to Va. yesterday and got in around 2am this morning.  A 1966 CL77 (305 Scrambler). This is was the bike I lusted after when I was in high school just a couple of years back.  The good part, same owner for 35 years and he bought the bike from the original owner in California when he was living out there.  I believe the information is still in the "Stash Tube" on the California plate.  The bike now has a clean numbers matching Tn. title and the clock is showing 6k which the seller swears is actual mileage since the bike has been sitting for last 20 years or so.  It starts, runs, (not well), and goes through the gears, and the compression at the kicker will break your leg.  Now the bad, it is missing the front fender and chainguard and since the bike was only produced for three years these pieces are rare as a one nutted unicorn.  Front, uncut, fenders on Ebay bring 4 to 5 hundred dollars, and they sell. I believe a member here has a CL77 in his collection, since I recall seeing it in a background shot.  I am hoping he will pull the parts from his pristine machine and mail them to me out of the goodness of his heart.  If not, I keep searching the web, and hit a few motorcycle swap meets when the weather permits.  I have done a few of these bikes through the years and in my opinion, some of the best lines and stance on high pipe bike ever produced.  I don't know if this one will be staying or not, but I am looking forward to making it pretty.  I will also tell you guys, who like me do this as a hobby and for fun, these damn bikes are not cheap anymore......

Very nice project!

A few months back when you started on your “one more” project, I followed along intently. Couple of reasons, one being that the “one more” aspect made me think it might be your last one.  Glad to see it was not!  Secondly, although I’ve been away from them a long time, I have always had a very, very soft spot in my heart for the SOHC 750s.  So, I was following.

And then it was over! By that I mean you got through that one in a hurry! Granted, it didn’t need as much as I expected, nonetheless your elbow grease was turned up and on another level.  Even before my health took a turn, I tended to take a bit more time on resurrections. That might be partly because A lot of the shop activity for me takes place in the Arizona off-season. I’m too busy riding when the weather is cooler. That slows down the process.

Take your time and smell the oil and fresh paint on this one!

I picked it up outside of Nashville, Thompson's Station, Tn.  I love your State, some damn pretty scenery.....If it wasn't for my Better Half having all of the family ties here, I would be heading your way although Knoxville rush hour looked a lot like Northern Virginia......

Knoxville roads are a trainwreck and have been for decades. You would think they would get a clue being a major artery towards the N and NE from the south  funneling through Knoxville but their construction projects just meet the current capacity needed which is outstripped less than six months after the project is done.
Grew up 100 miles NE of Knoxville adjacent to VA line so, I understand this issue.

Well you really don't need groceries in the house, pay the mortgage, or leave anything for the kids.  The motor is loaded, I am heading to my 305 guru friend in Pennsylvania in the morning to drop it off for a rebuild.  I got it up and running and even took it around the block a few times, sit and idled, reved up great, and shifted like new, "BUT"  huffed a s^&t pot full of blue smoke out of the right hand side. It very well could be stuck ring from all of the years sitting, but since I am going to probably be so up side down on this one, I am 95% sure it is going to end up staying. The engine guy has done work for me before, it will be perfect when it returns and I am going to spend the wait time making the rest of it pretty.

This build has certainly started off on a rocky road.  I bought a complete uncut rough front fender off of Ebay for a small fortune.  I got shipped a chain guard for a CB750F and my fender went overseas because apparently the seller does his shipping labels during happy hour.  This really was my first bad experience on the site, I had to open a case to get a refund due to the guy being a complete unadulterated "AH" so I am still searching.

The good thing is this project is going to last awhile, I am too broke to buy anything else, and remaining parts I need will probably require the sale of at least one kidney.  Damn I love the world of old motorcycles.  At least I got the seat done, now on to the rest...

Preliminary results from the builder, 5 over, oil rings past acceptable limits, and cylinder honing was not done very professionally, probably one backyard rebuild.  Glad I took it up.  it may be awhile for any further posts, my old computer tower crashed and I believe I have lost all photos of past restorations.  My Son-in-Law who is a IT manager for a large government contractor has tried a retrieval with no luck so far.  I have a new screen and computer combination set up that is fast, beautiful screen graphics, runs Windows 11.  I have no idea how to load pictures currently and it may take awhile.  Really old people shouldn't be presented with new technology, it is not good for them.....

Some disassembly required.....Parts everywhere but all bagged and tagged.....Picked up an original set of Pacifico Snuff or Not's.  They cost $1.50 each back in the 60's.  I will never admit what I had to pay for this set....I have cleaned, polished, and got the front tire mounted, it was pretty rough but looks decent from 5 feet or so......

Have a great Thanksgiving one and all.......

Nice project! I’m working on my grandson’s Honda Z50 and it is fun to work on something different!

Curious..... whey the sheet of plywood bolted to your lift?

It would increase rigidity, and not be as slippery as a steel deck, not scratch as easily any painted steel, unless it hits a bolt head...

The exhaust baffles are just period correct, they never worked all that great and some guys made their own out of fender washers......There is a slight change in tone with them turned down but not that much....

The plywood was an easy fix for a cheap arse Harbor Freight lift that the rear sagged when anything heavier than a moped was lifted..... The rear ramp section is no longer detectable but it is now solid.....

I am still searching for a "FRONT FENDER' for this bike and have exhausted every resource I know of so please if anyone runs across one in any condition let me know......

I am pretty sure this is going to be the last project for me due to a number of factors.  Currently I have two motors out for rebuild, this CL77 engine and my Triumph T100C.  I got bad news about the Triumph a couple of days ago, apparently the motor had been rebuilt prior to my purchase but the PO had neglected to clean the sludge trap and debris worked it way into the right side jug causing pretty extensive piston and wall damage.  My Buddy, is a Triumph savant and will bring it back after a compete rebuild, but having two done at once is going to hurt the mad money funds real bad.  I am keeping both bikes in my small herd so I want them done right.

I have an appointment with my orthopedic Doctor next month and I am going to beg for one more cortisone injection in my knee and go ahead schedule surgery for a complete replacement after the first of next year.  The pain has become almost continuous and I am having a hell of time getting up and down and in and out of my truck, much less riding a motorcycle.  I would like to have both bikes done prior to being laid up for a while after the surgery.  I know it is coming and have dropped 20 pounds of excess weigh in the last few months to aid in hopefully a quick recovery. I am pushing 73 years of age and have never spent so much as one night in a hospital, so I must say I am certainly not looking forward to this.

I have decided that after I am up and going again, I am going to leave the life of full retirement and go back to work, probably in a part-time capacity.  To be brutally honest, when I am not working in the garage, I find myself getting bored.  To add to the mix, project bikes, in particular, vintage Honda's, are just about impossible to locate that are affordable enough to make any profit at the end of a restoration.  Hopefully this coming spring, will find me riding around delivering auto parts,  pushing a forklift in a warehouse, or some other stress free job that will keep me busy a few days a week, provide a little mad money, and cause my Wife to have to do the laundry again.  I am also looking forward to riding more on days off without the pain.  As we all know life certainly doesn't always go as planned, but that is my course right now......

Sorry to hear about the knee. It sucks. My best friend had his done a year ago. He really stayed on the rehab schedule and recovered very quickly. We rode all summer and he really is like new. He also lost about 40 lbs...... Good luck and get it done!

Given your constant pain on the knee you will be surprised by how quickly you are in much lower pain levels after surgery. Many feel the pain is far less post op than they were dealing with prior.
Speedy recovery and do the PT as prescribed with all the home exercises to fully rehab the knee.

Sucks about the Triumph motor, but your friend is likely fully capable of fixing it properly so you won't even know it previously even had an issue.

Well, I get a brand spanking new shinny chrome knee on February 28th, next year.  I am attempting to wrap up as many projects as possible prior to then to include the Wife's Christmas gift.  I am thinking a new wood splitting maul, the handle on the one she is using currently has cracked.

I have decided on a whim to go red frame on this CL77, I had to go to three different stores to get enough paint, yea these supply chain issues are being wrapped up quicky......

You can still get Cloud Silver from Honda Powersports dealers in spray cans… not cheap but correct color…if respirating early bike silver fenders and similar parts…
